I'm not familiar with his political beliefs. I know he wrote a pamphlet about socialism and wikipedia said he was an anarchist...

He was a 'socialist', which in 1880 didn't necessarily preclude you hanging out with both William Morris and Kropotkin (they hung out together so why not?). I don't think he ever specifically claimed to be an Anarchist. He existed in that slightly muddy world of socialism in Britain where well-bred aesthetes (and Irish arrivistes) rubbed shoulders with grubby Eastern European zealots (and reformed princes).

I can recommend reading 'The Soul of Man under Socialism', I thought it was awesome (but obviously, didn't agree with everything in it).
