Hello guys!
I'm a high school student from Southern California who has a pretty deep interest in East Asia (Japan/Korea in particular).
I've been a communist and feminist for nearly five years now, and an environmentalist for even longer. In the meantime, I've come to understand my beliefs better, which is pretty nice. I think my beliefs are pretty flexible, though, though I'm not really sure what I mean by that.
It's 6:02 AM and I've stayed up the entire night. My sleeping schedule has been ruined. Wonderful. :)

That's not entirely true. I and some other posters have made valiant efforts to draw attention to politics and struggles in the far east on the forum. The problem is that nobody pays the threads any attention.

my forums activity has gone massively down lately, so i unfortunately don't pay attention to most threads. besides middle east, asian struggles effort posts i've seen have mostly been focused on south asian and philippine struggles
if you can drop me some names or threads i'd appreciate that a lot

Oh, I come from a site where every nation name is taken, and I was all "holy shiznits Japan isn't taken."
It's like my favorite country, haha.

Ah, I speak Korean semi-fluently, and I'm still in the process of the learning Japanese. I've been trying to improve my Korean recently by watching Korean movies and reading some Korean children's books, but I don't know if it's helped me much, haha. I'm also currently learning Mandarin in school, since my school decided to remove French from the school due to a lack of general interest among students (</3).
Japanese has been really easy for me, especially the grammar. I don't study it at all, just read some stuff about how the language works, but it's great since the grammar is virtually identical to Korean, haha. While there's considerable difference in native vocabulary, there's also a lot of similar vocabulary due to loanwords from China, as well as due to the adoption of a lot of Japanese words during the colonial period (which Japan in turn borrowed from other languages such as English or Portuguese).
I find it sort of hard to closely follow the situation, but I get what news I can by often googling "Japan" and reading the Japan Times. I really wish I could have more news about South Korea, but I don't see stuff much often in English and websites such as that for Hankyoreh are too difficult for me to read (need to improve my Korean </3). There often isn't much news from NK, but I get what I can.
I don't follow situations too closely though, since I have other responsibilities that I still need to catch up on.
But yeah, if any of you are interested I'd definitely be interested in posting about things such as about left-wing movements in Japan or the struggle for democracy in South Korea under its authoritarian military dictatorship. :)
But honestly, imo I don't really know much about everything. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about everything.

Thanks!
My first interest in Korea was sparked by me being a right-wing Korean nationalist in elementary school and the beginning of middle school, which I guess is pretty embarrassing. However, by the end of my first year of middle school I'd lost my interest, haha. I honestly don't know how relevant this is to my current interest. I actually started hating Korea after I moved there in 2010, and I still hate that I had to move and live there for a while. My current interest was sparked when there were all these misconceptions about North Korea everywhere, and due to the fact that people wanted to do a lot of horrible things to the place.
By the beginning of the 7th grade, I'd become obsessed with Japanese culture, especially things like the song Sakura Sakura, the traditional architecture, the mountains, the snow, Buddhism, and the cherry blossoms. Especially the cherry blossoms. While I gradually lost this interest, this was regained after the tsunami and earthquake in Tohoku in 2011. I think me liking Japan had a lot to do with the fact that I wanted to be different from all the people in my school who really hated Japan, since I was living in Korea at the time. However, the interest stayed with me even after I left Korea in early 2012.
I also think I became more entrenched in learning about East Asia due to how eurocentric pretty much everyone I know is.
But yeah, it'd be really nice if people paid attention to East Asia.

Ah, thanks! If there's anything I'm confused about, I'll definitely do so.
Living behind the Orange Curtain, the left here is pretty much nonexistent. While I do know of one fellow leftist, she calls herself a social democrat. Most people here are pretty strongly religious and strongly support capitalism. They also possess a lot of misconceptions about communism. There's also a lot of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean kids, and they tend to really hate any mentions of communism and socialism.
I don't know of any groups, but if I find any, that'd be really nice, hehe.
