Hi guys,

I've been working on setting up a Socialist organisation called the Association of Federative Socialists. Yet my Secretary-general is insisting that calling a university organisation Socialist in the Maltese context, where most Maltese are biased against socialism, would be suicide. I cannot stomach the thought of calling our organisation a social democrat organisation, or a liberal organisation. What do I do? Is he right that nobody will want to associate themselves with us? My argument was that substance would win people over, not the superficiality of one name or another. He doesn't seem to want to accept that.

The truth is better than no truth. It is your organization, you call it what you wish, and if you are proud of that name, then let it be called that. Anyways, if the ignorant people want to be biased against socialism, then let them, but you are fighting for the workers and peasants of the world who built these civilizations with their own two hands, and I highly respect that. The leftists in the international community will support you, like me here right now. To sum it up, be proud of your name and believe what you wish.

I think your gen-sec is being worried about nothing (or perhaps not a dedicated socialist himself). Universities are places where young people are exploring new ideas and get drawn to the likes of socialist and anarchist thought. If you're not willing to put yourself out there and argue your position then these people will slip you by. The traditional social democrat parties (if they can even be called social democrat any more) have proven themselves weak and hollow time and again and it's time for something new to sweep away the remains of the capitalist order: socialism.

move against the current. be more concerned about the correctness of your views than other peoples reaction to it.
