I saw a story on this on the news. Apparently some author has written a book about the murder, claiming that it wasn't a spontaneous act of homophobic violence but that Shepard's murder was connected with his supposed involvement in the local crystal meth trade, and that at least one of Shepard's killers had known him long before killing him:

Laramie police and some investigators of the crime have denied some of these claims though.

I had read about this before and I think the author brings up some important points that really do make you question whether this was a hate crime or a crime committed by a thuggish sociopath who was influenced by meth. I don't care for the way in which it blames the victim (drugs), but it certainly does put a hole in the idea that Matthew was a victim of a lynching because he was gay.

Jimenez has been pushing that theory for a decade, but has never produced any hard evidence.
