In the last few years under the Bush administration, it has become a bit of a cliché on the left to poke fun at the intelligence of George W. Bush. When it comes to economics however I have to change the tune and admit that George W. Bush who in college was a business major, and has an MBA degree, surely knows the law of supply and demand.

When the demand is greater than the supply the price goes up. Increase of the price will increase of the supply. That’s economics 101 and it can be applied to wages and jobs also.

The higher the wages a company is willing to pay for a job, the more applicants they will receive. Right now in the United States there are plenty of unemployed workers, yet they are unwilling to take some of the low wage manual labor jobs that undocumented (or guest) workers take. They will try and fool you by saying that these are jobs that American citizens wouldn’t want, however that is only because of the price (wage) that it is set at is so low that the supply (workers) is also low.

In other words, if the people wanting to hire undocumented workers (because they can't find American workers) would raise the price, (wage) the supply of workers would go up. The Bush plan is just a plan to enable employers to hire a sufficient number of workers without having to raise the price (wage).

The French philosopher Charles Fourier (1772-1834) had believed that the way we have set up our society is backwards from what actually make sense. For example, we pay teachers more than we pay custodians, yet it’s the custodian who puts more time and labor into his work. Therefore, it only seemed logical to Fourier (and myself) that the least desirable jobs should be paid more.

The key to at least making the least desirable jobs more desirable jobs is better labor laws.

In Mexico, when the strike flag goes up, it is unlawful to go in or out of the struck company or plant. In the United States when the pickets go up, unemployed workers go in looking for a job and the police protect them from the strikers, who often lose their jobs.

The key to this Republican strategy is to keep a sufficient number of workers unemployed. Every time a Republican takes the White House,
unemployment goes up. Bringing in guest workers who can't become citizens or ever vote is another way to keep unemployment up and wages down.

Did you write this? It's a good article. To me the Bush immigrant thing is just him letting those who already have the jobs with the wages that no one can live on be legal in the country and insure that the lower than miminum wage work force will be intact so he can get over with that ethnic group by looking like he's an inviting guy.

Although it would be intresting that now that those workers are legal if they will form or join unions and demand livable wages or if they still live in fear of just being replaced by Casey Jones and others who jump at the chanse to steal anothers job.
