I just loaded a version of Linux on my donated tower. (Mint w/Cinnamon) Of course now I am being told about all the better versions that I could have loaded instead. With all the possible combinations of distributions, desktop enviroments etc. the choices are endless. Looking at the fractal tree of choices available with Linux it brings to mind the history of Trotskyism with its major divisions and ever smaller splits. Compare this with say the 'socialism in one country' evolutionary tree. That has to be the equivalent to Windows. Haven't got to Apple yet. (I am a poor boy that doesn't make his living doing graphical work.)
Has anyone else played with this idea?

Capitalism is the OS we're using right now and it keeps giving us the the blue screen of death.Any open source alternative is preferable.
So perhaps capitalism is Windows
Left keynsianism=Krugman,Steiglitz, etc is a proprietary distribution-Red Hat Linux, etc
Socialism-a completly open source distro-Debbian ? Ubuntu
Those who are more up on the technical details could carry the analogy further.

http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.htm (http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html)l (http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html) this would be communism i guess. though its crappy, so i dont want the analogy to work.
Apple is libertarian as it is irrevocably petty-bourgeoisie, childish, and hipster.

Hmm at least with Linux there is at least there is the Linux kernel that all distros share. With socialism there is not consensus as to what it is ...

well, you also have other unix opensource operating systems. Gnu Herd and BSD come to mind.
Just trying to muddy things up.

Wasn't Linus Torvalds (inventor of Linux)involved in left politics? According to Wikipedia, FWIW his parents were "ca,pus radicals".
