View Full Version : Writer's block!

Man, this is embarrasing, but I've dedicated tonight to doing some pressing assignments for school (ie not doing my usual method of "do assignment due on Monday at 2 AM Monday morning") and I'm suffering from serious writer's block, which is totally unlike me. I have surfed through higher education on a wave of bullshit. But now I feel like I may have fried my brain or something, because the bullshit refuses to flow! It's an insanely easy assignment for English class, too! The only reason I'm taking English is because my last English credit from another university didn't transfer in for some reason, so I'm stuck taking English Class Number 35 in my school career. This is very frusterating. I'm thinking about going to the bar to help clear my head.

The bar is just going to make it easier to forget that you have shit to do. All of academic liberal arts contains at least a seed of bullshit (http://press.princeton.edu/titles/7929.html); if you don't have anything else, just plant that seed and let it grow. Finally, this quote probably won't help, but I support the claim that "procrastination is the soul rebelling against entrapment."

I've never tried this for bullshitting my way through an essay or research paper, but...

When I sit down to write a new creative piece, my ritual tends to be taking a shot or two of Sailor Jerry and brewing a pot of coffee. One or two shots isn't anywhere near enough to get me even a little drunk, but it helps get the creative juices flowing I think. The following two or three cups of coffee helps me hone my focus and get to the task at hand.

Hope that might help. Good luck mate.

I usually go for a walk. Walks and sitting in bad weather helps too but sometimes it creates side projects which can be a pretty big problem...but sometimes the other projects finish quickly and encourage effort back onto the original one.

I eventually just forced myself to write and ground it out. I don't think my teacher is that harsh on the grading front, based on some of the work I've done previously in class, so I think I'll be fine.
