View Full Version : Question for commies
Indysocialist

I decided to post this in Opposing Ideologies since I can get a better array of answers here. I have to debate whether or not Communism posed a real threat to the internal security of the US (IE: Was there a conspiracy). I'm arguing that that there wasn't and in fact we should be more concerned with other groups (people that bomb abortion clinics, White supremecist militants etc). So I need to ask 3 questions for ANY AND ALL COMMUNISTS (like I said, I posted here for the best variety so Stalinists are more then welcome to join in on this). In other words, I'm trying to get a few statistics for the class outside of the textbook. Here they are, and sorry for the poor spelling tonight, I'm pretty tired at the moment:
1. If there were a revolution happening, would you be willing to kill for it?
2. Would you advocate the overthrow of the United States government by Communists?
3. Are you an admirer of Josef Stalin? If so do you deny or defend the crimes he is accused of?
4. If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union?
5. Do you believe a Communist/Socialist state in the US is feasible?
I appreciate any help with this.

McCarthyism and the Cold War
At the end of World War 2, the United States and the Soviet Union
were left as the two main powers in the world. The 1947 Truman Doctrine stated
that it was the responsibility of the United States to "support free peoples who are
resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures"
(TrumanLibrary.org). Believing that if Communism began to spread, other
countries would also fall to Communism (a theory known as the ’Domino Effect’),
U. S. politics became dominated by anti-Communist feelings.
In 1947, the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
focused it’s anti-Communist agenda on the entertainment industry. HUAC called
many people from the Hollywood community to testify regarding an alleged
Communist influence in the entertainment industry. A group of ten "unfriendly
witnesses" used their Firth Amendment rights and refused to testify. They were
found guilty of contempt of court and they each received sentences of between six
and twelve months in prison.
On February 9th, 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin made
a speech in which he claimed to have a list of known members of the American
Communist Party who were part of the federal government. One of the famous
trials of those who worked for the government was the case of Ethel and Julius
Rosenberg. Based mainly on the testimony of Ethel’s younger brother, David
Greenglass, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were convicted of espionage and
executed in 1953.
One of the laws used by the HUAC in their fight against Communism
was the Smith Act passed in 1940. Under the Smith Act, it was illegal to advocate
the violent overthrow of the government. It was even illegal to "conspire to
advocate the violent overthrow of the government, to organize a group that
advocated the violent overthrow of the government, or to be a member of a group
that advocated the violent overthrow of the government" (Pember, P.49). In
1948, some of the top leaders of the American Communist Party were charged
and convicted under the Smith Act. Claims that the Smith Act was
unconstitutional were rejected by the Supreme Court of the United States. The
Smith Act was later declared unconstitutional in 1957 and the convictions were
overturned.

1. If there were a revolution happening, would you be willing to kill for it?
if the elites were the ones fighting against us. i would refuse to kill a working class man or womyn tricked into defending the elites. also if the elites surrendered, and were willing to have their capital seized and redistrobuted, then i would spare them.
2. Would you advocate the overthrow of the United States government by Communists?
why wouldn't i? i would advocate the overthrow of any capitalist nation by a popular revolution in favor of communism.
3. Are you an admirer of Josef Stalin? If so do you deny or defend the crimes he is accused of?
im sort of split on this. i don't agree with the stalinist system of totalitarian socialism, but i also believe that many of the crimes he commited were eggzagerated(spelling?) by western media. he also rapidly industriized the USSR to the point that they were acually a threat to the U$ administration. he was not my idea of a benevolent ruler, is what im saying
4. If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union?
i was two when the USSR colapsed, but i would have, yes. a more revelant question is maybe, would you live in cuba? and yes i would. unfortunatly im a white boy from canada, and the whie devil isn't the rest of the worlds first pick as comrade.
5. Do you believe a Communist/Socialist state in the US is feasible?
i think global communism is possible, but first we must free the masses from the grip oif the cappies, who have convinced many people that their intrests are congruent.

3. Are you an admirer of Josef Stalin? If so do you deny or defend the crimes he is accused of?
No, he was a filthy murderer, even if the death tallys were exxagerated.
4. If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union?
No I wouldn't.
5. Do you believe a Communist/Socialist state in the US is feasible?

1. If there were a revolution happening, would you be willing to kill for it?
Only if all other means had failed. Che himself said in Guerilla Warfare: "Where a government has come into power through some form of popular vote, fradulent or not, and maintains at least an appearance of constitutional legality, the guerilla outbreak cannot be promoted, since the possibilities of peaceful struggle have not yet been exhausted."
2. Would you advocate the overthrow of the United States government by Communists?
Again, only if all other means had failed.
3. Are you an admirer of Josef Stalin? If so do you deny or defend the crimes he is accused of?
I do not know enough about Stalin to form an opinion one way or another. I need to learn more.
4. If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union?
What Soviet Union?
5. Do you believe a Communist/Socialist state in the US is feasible?
No. We (as a whole) are too individualistic and capitalistic.

2. Yes
3. Not really, I do not support some of his crimes, but I think that he did many great things...
4. No...
5. Maybe, depends on how the world will change after some time...

1. If there were a revolution happening, would you be willing to kill for it?
If it was necessary yes.
2. Would you advocate the overthrow of the United States government by Communists?
Communists advocate the over throwing of any government.
3. Are you an admirer of Josef Stalin? If so do you deny or defend the crimes he is accused of?
No. Stalin may have called himself a communist but he wasnt, by any stretch of the imagination. Most stalinists do not defend his crimes they deny them all together which I think is as delusional as denying the holocaust.
4. If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union?
No. But if I did I would activly oppose it.
5. Do you believe a Communist/Socialist state in the US is feasible?
First of all communist state is an oxymoron.Secondly I believe communism can be achieved anywhere in the world. If there is an exploited working class then there communism is feasible.

1. Yes, definitely.
2. Yes, I would fully support a Communist takeover of the US.
3. Hell no! Stalin (in my opinion) was an enemy of the Soviet Union and an enemy of the People. I also think that if Leon Trotsky had taken power in the Soviet Union instead of Stalin, then the Soviet Union would still exist today. Stalin set the Soviet union on a slippery slope to destruction.
4. First of all, the Soviet Union ceased to exist as of the late eighties/early nineties, and no i wouldn't have wanted to live in the Soviet Union. The only communist countries i would live in would be Cuba and possibly Vietnam.
5. It is possible, but the Social and Economic factors would prevent it from occuring at this moment in time.
I hope that i have been of help, tell us how well the debate goes!

I'm afraid I phrased one of my questions poorly. The one asking "If given the chance would you willingly live in the Soviet Union". What I mean is, if it were still around or if you were alive during the 40's, 50's, 60's etc would you willingly move there?

1. As a general ethics question, I would theoretically be willing to fight for communism. I cannot make a claim either way because I have never been put in that sort of situation.
I would be willing to risk my life, I am much more sure of that.
2. Yes.
3. This is a tricky question for me. My ideas about Stalin differ from most other people's, as far as I know. My direct response to this question would be that I support Lenin and Stalin over the Czar, just as I support Castro over Batista and Ho Chi Minh over French colonialism. I do not support Trotsky over Stalin and do not believe that their leadership would have been particularly different. I also do not believe that Stalin was guilty of nearly as many atrocities as he has been accused of.
I see Stalin as a direct and logical extension of Lenin's ideas, which I do not support, but I do believe that the Soviet proletariat suffered less under Stalin than they would have under Trotsky or the Czar.
4. I would rather live in the Soviet Union than in Capitalist or Czarist Russia. I would say that, even for the poor, conditions in America are better than they have ever been in the Soviet Union; I do not hold this against the Soviet Union, but it does influence my choice of countries in which to live.
5. I believe it is more than feasible, it is inevitable.
