As if it wasn't already a shitty situation for LGBT people in Louisiana....now Gov. Bobby Jindal has appointed the head of the Family Research Council to the state's Law Enforcement Commission. (http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2013/09/25/louisiana_s_law_enforcement_commission_now_include s_by_tony_perkins_president.html)

Don't forget that the commission is located in Baton Rouge, where two gay men were arrested under the invalid sodomy law earlier this year. (http://theadvocate.com/news/police/6580728-123/gays-in-baton-rouge-arrested) As the commission awards grants and governs practices of the State Police and local cops....don't be surprised if shit like this happens again under Perkin's watch.

I remember that Baton Rouge nonsense, what an outrage.

While I'm not aware of people being the leaders of said groups, in Texas members of or at least politicians greatly influenced by some of these nutty interests groups/"think tanks" are very common. They've shown themselves to be quite a force unfortunately on the governing board of the Texas Education Agency and within Texas's health department dealing with womens' health.

Governor Jindal was also influenced by these groups when he and the rest of the peanut gallery barreled a voucher system through for the state of Louisiana to operate under. AFAIK Louisiana is the only state in the union to have this kind of system, I guess Jindal is serious about out-conservating everyone else he can in the country.

On the topic of questionable appointments of individuals with hate for LGBT, I believe North Carolina appointed Orson Scott Card, whose contempt for homosexuals is well known (to put it lightly) among some other bizarre conspiracies, to the state's board for public media.

I wouldn't be surprised in some of the more rural white parishes. In the urbanized areas like New Orleans, never.

Keep in mind this is the region of the US where some high schools are just now having desegregated student events.
