So in the 15th and 16th century it was common for composers to use unoriginal melodies to write their masses.
They would use a melody from some song or an already existing mass and use it as compositional material.

Now this was sometimes discreet as they could put the melody in the middle (tenors or altos insted of basses or sopranos) and it would be less easy to hear.

Clemens non Papa composed this song

It's an old french song from the 16th century and the words are:

You girls of tender 15 years of age,
do not gather at the fountain anymore.
You eyes are too radiant,
your nipples too pointy,
your pussies too swollen,
your hearts merrier than those of the crones.
You girls of tender 15 years of age,
do not gather at the fountain anymore.

I heard somewhere that "fountain" was actually the name they gave to public baths. So you can see the content of this song...

Now guess what this guy composed some time later (still in the 16th century)

edit: bleh, never know how to put the youtube videos here. Anyway, you can hear pretty clearly that the beginning is identical. Now imagine what people thought when they wetn to church and recognised the melody lol

Using secular melodies in masses was later prohibited by the Catholic church.
Still, this guy got away with a pretty big fucking provocation lol

I can only imagine the reaction of the original composer when he learned that someone had created a mass with his music, and the priests, and all those who discovered
