The CPA and the CPLA didn't "bolt" from the Socialist Party, the Right expelled them through bureaucratic means. That said, I don't see how this was a "tragedy". The Left was not prepared for the expulsion, true, and was not able to win over a majority of the SP, but what good would a "united" socialist party dominated by the Right do? It would hinder the development of the revolutionary movement in America.
A majority of the Trotskyist movement in America actually sought entry into the SP in the forties, but they only succeeded in splitting the organisation. The faction around Max Shachtman later joined the SP-SDF, but by then Shachtman was a bona fide Cold War social-democrat. The policies of the Shachtman-Thomas leadership were, to put it mildly, cringe-worthy, imperialist and conservative.
The current SPUSA is a split from the old one, which had long since dissolved. Their politics are really the most abject sort of reformism and democratic posturing. I think any SPUSA member would be restricted here. Amusingly enough, they seem more hostile to Obama than the CPUSA, probably because, no matter how CPUSA is, the SPUSA is still closer to, and in more direct competition with, the bomber-in-chief.

Well, excuse me for providing information on the SPUSA, and in particular correcting the statement about the CPA and the CPLA "bolting" out of SPA. If you'd like to do so, you can ask a moderator to split the topic, but you should be aware of the fact that unless the administration has been lax recently, there are no SPUSA, or DSA, or CCDS, members outside of the OI section. Such mutations of SI social-democracy are restricted on this site.
