What country would you represent in a model UN?

Next week classes start back up for me and in one of them it will involve participating in a model UN. I'm unsure who I want to represent at this point so I figured I would come here and ask as we all some some similar viewpoints.

I did this at college back in the day. It is most fun representing a powerful nation eg the US or China, since then you are going to be involved in most decisions (and frankly you don't take part in these things on campus so nobody will talk to you).

Or you could go the opposite route and choose a poor country, and take a powerful principled stand on an issue. That can be rewarding too.

I was part of MUN in high school. My countries ranged anywhere from Greece to Turkey to PRC. I sat as co-chair for Security Council my senior year.

The most interesting were the obscure nations; having to explain where the Spratly Islands were & their economy & politics was educational. Mind you, I was in MUN before Internet was highly accessible, so research was all through libraries pretty much.

But PRC was most likely my most enjoyable considering the crisis' usually involve all members of the nations on Security, not just Security council members

Palestine got an observer seat as a "non-member observer state", which is an upgrade from its previous position as simply an "observer" (status granted to some supranational entities and organizations) to non-member state, which only the Vatican has besides Palestine.

Whether the school would let one participate as such a nation, I don't know- that's up to their policies. However seeing as an observer state can't vote on anything, it is unlikely they'd let a student do it.

As for OP, if you want to make things interesting be a nation the US generally doesn't see eye to eye with. Being a nation which can't achieve everything by force would make more room for diplomacy to be relevant, so pretty much any of your players outside the US, China, or Russia would be good. Picking some emerging nations from the ranks of the G20, say Mexico, Turkey, or Brazil would be of interest too.

Pay attention also to what areas of the world aren't getting much attention by what other students have chosen. This will help with regional and contiental dynamics to come to the surface that otherwise won't be there if mostly everyone is some nation from the Americas or Europe.

... unfortunately when I did this I just picked stupid things, like being Albania one year because they were first in the UN, or Macedonia because they have to display their name as "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia".

I feel like Cuba is the obvious choice for principled speechifying against American imperialism and its running dogs.
If you're allowed to do observer nations, I'd do the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta - a weird quasi-military Catholic charity organization who are recognized by the UN as sovereign despite having no territory. I just get a kick out of weird shit like that, tho.

I remember for my final year exam in International Relations I represented North Korea (by choice, believe it or not! :grin:). It was quite interesting, but the international stage, as you will discover if you ever do a model UN, is such a corrupt, dishivelled sordid affair that its only fun when its precisely a model UN and not real life. Because diplomacy is far too machiavellian for my taste. The lobbying, the bureaucracy, the realisation that ultimetatly whatever you pass that is remotely going to change the world can just be vetoed by the Security Council (the real Axis of Evil), and that therefore it is utterly pointless.

I did model un my last year of high school, its ranked as the 15th best team in the country. If you're going to actual MUN conferences then you don't get to choose what state you get.

don't laugh about picking DPRK and stuff, people in model un seriously conflict with each other over who gets North Korea, Iran, and Somalia.

model un is awful. Its not like history geeks or anything, its a bunch of good-looking rich kids learning how to become manipulative tyrants and dictators. As the Egyptian Minister of Interior, I effectively crushed protests, blamed false-flag operations on the Muslim Brotherhood, and pulled a coup. I almost won basically because I came up with the most sinister shit in my head.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think my top choice is Cuba, but I am curious why people suggest North Korea. I personally do not like anything North Korea stands for, maybe you do or maybe just for the fun factor?
