Does anyone have experience with laser tattoo removal? I have a tattoo that I really want gone and I've been thinking about having it lasered. While researching tattoo removal, I realized that they are making lasers now pretty cheap in China and it's basically unregulated and I could buy the whole machine and just do it myself and be able to remove several or fade them enough to cover them with something else.
The laser technology is pretty good now, and the procedure is not exactly rocket science. I don't know about the quality of the lasers, but assuming I found a decent one...well any thoughts?

This is a truly awful idea

whether you do it at home or not probably depends whether you prefer tattoos or interesting scars

To clarify, you can buy the same lasers that "professionals" use for less then it would cost to have a tattoo removed. Apparently what makes someone a professional in laser tattoo removal is operating a laser in an office environment. The entire tattoo removal field is unregulated.

Well, it can't hurt to try it out (except for how much it will hurt)
You're right about the tattoo removal game being unregulated and sketchy but I know plenty of people who work with/have worked with lasers, and they aren't to be taken lightly (pardon the pun) It basically comes down to the fact that lasers are dangerous pieces of kit. Even very low-powered lasers have the potential to harm you, and obviously the more powerful the laser, the more dangerous it probably is. As I said, I know people who use lasers, some of whom have carried out research on high-powered lasers - and I have heard more than one account of the really nasty injuries you can aquire using lasers.
I would seriously consider your options before you attempt this yourself. I prefer my comrades to be non-charred corpses, thank you.

Look mate, i can have only one suggestion in this.
Please, DONT.
The fact that you can buy a medical equipment similar(i doubt it) to the one professionals use, does not make you a professional, or cable of using it even if it seems to be the most simple thing in the world.
Last thing in the world you want to mess with, your health. The risk its just too much to take.
As for the tattoo, think first, then ink;)

i can't even imagine burning off my own tattoo, i think the pain would be too much to calmly do. best to be safe, i imagine it feeling like taking a torch to yourself. lie to someone and say it's gang related, alot of places do it free under those circumstances.

I don't know which makes me cringe more. Self tattoo removal or an unregulated machine from China. Combine the 2 and you could end up very sick or dead from some infection.

There is a difference between 'operating a laser' and 'operating a laser with no training and in a haphazard and unsafe way'.

I think the ugly-black-box is an important punk symbol. I guess depending on how big the tattoo is, that may or may not be appealing.

Have you gone into a tattoo parlor and asked if the artists can make it into something else? I'm pretty sure this is an extremely common thing and one which provides some good creative opportunities for tattoo artists. If you haven't done this yet I would. Check out all the places in your town/city and see what they say - someone will be able to transform it into something else.

That's not really an option in this case. It's on the back of my neck and it's messed up precisely because I tried to have it fixed once before. It was terribly painful and I couldn't stop shaking, felt like my head was being sawed off. It was far and away the most painful tattoo I've ever had done - twice. I've had two coverups in the past which turned out fine. I wish I could just have it covered. I either have to remove it or live with it. I wear my hair up a lot...I just really hate it.

 Seriously, do not take this advice. The process of laser tattoo removal is essentially burning the tattoo off your skin. It can seriously 'hurt to try' from a standpoint that you may make this tattoo look even worse with improper treatment, not to even begin to imagine the physical pain aspect.

And do you think a laser is going to be better? On your neck? Doing it yourself? Laser removal is far more painful.

I won't be doing it on my own neck. That would be impossible - I've already got a volunteer. If I buy a laser, I plan to test it out on an old tattoo on my leg first. The pain is a non-issue for me...and laser removal really isn't supposed to hurt that badly anyway, especially with the new ones - compared to a tattoo anyway. I'm willing to endure the pain, even if it is worse, which is doubtful. I still haven't decided yet...I'm a bit more worried about the pain of shelling out a thousand dollars on something that might not work.

Save your money and have it done professionally. You get what you pay for. Its smarter to do it as you can afford it.

Regardless, I plan to do absolutely nothing for the moment. I'm just trying to think about it from all sides, even the 'I've lived with it for over 7 years, is it really that critical to have it removed at all' side as well.

Get a tattoo over the one that you don't like that says "VOID" in large red letters.

note, getting an plastic surgeon to remove a scar will always cost a lot more than getting a pro to remove or cover up a bad tattoo, do not DIY with this shit.

On the topic, i think we need to give a conclusion to this thread, and i think the conclusion point is universally accepted and was pointed out a few times before.Thats a bad, a really bad idea! This comes from people who worked on tattoo industry, this comes from people who have knowledges on tattoos, and this come from people with just plain common sense, what you think of doing is a bad idea.
