What are some good leftist (Marxist, communist) sources of news and current events? I know a few but other than those I don't know any others, and I'm tired of reading news from conservative and liberal media.

For Canadian news, I highly recommend The Dominion (http://www.dominionpaper.ca/) / The Media Co-Op (http://www.mediacoop.ca/). Though some writers occasionally veer into NDP/Social Democrat territory, it's generally pretty solid. In terms of longform journalism, I'm also quite partial to Briarpatch (http://briarpatchmagazine.com/), based in Saskatchewan.
Outside of Canada, Infoshop News (http://news.infoshop.org) is a relatively broad scope roundup of news to interest not only of anarchists, but the broad left. There's not much original content, but it's a great resource for finding other media sources as a consequence. It's actually how I first discovered Counterpunch (http://www.counterpunch.org/), which looks and feels a little out of date (think "very internet circa 1999"), but updates regularly, and features a wide variety of writers from across the left.
Also, for a laugh, check out @news (http://ww.anarchistnews.org). It's often a lot of utter garbage hipster nonsense, which, of you have the right sense of humour, rules.

NHK although it isn't leftist, is rather neutral.
They don't waste your time with "feel good" and op-ed anchor stuff.
Now as far as a commy source, Maoist Rebel News on YouTube is pretty good.

I'm watching yesterday's Democracy Now (http://www.democracynow.org) right now. I suppose it leans toward the Progressive side, though, there's an interview with Robert Reich about income inequality, but Chomsky was on last week and they seem to have his kind of analysis in general.
There's the mashup site AlterNet (http://www.alternet.org) but it's not exactly revolutionary.
Personally I get a lot of analysis from ZNet (http://www.zcommunications.org/znet), run by Michael Albert et. al. who came up with ParEcon and have a strong affinity for Chomsky, which is why I'm so properly indoctrinated to do their bidding. ;)

Why would media from 'leftist' sites matter as compared to any of the mainstream (non-murdoch) journalist papers? 80% of the news articles in leftist mags are just resourced from those papers anyway.
I'd advise you not yo dope yourself into maoist demagoguery by denouncing all news that does not hold a political bias as 'bourgeois' or liberal'. It'll end up with you, unsurprisingly, developing an extremely one-sided point of view on politics. Sure, look up some websites or blogs that have a news section for specific workers struggles or activities (e.g. like the SPLC's website and it's news on immigrant worker exploitation and monitoring of far-right groups (http://www.splcenter.org/), and left organisations which have articles for regional struggles), but for general news just read your average joe papers.

Yeah he's wrong on certain things but he's ok.
Yeah sure people aren't going to meet eye to eye on everything, but he does a decent job with his research.
For whatever reason though he doesn't like Trotsky, he's been wrong about Gorbachev, and he won't address the issue of Tito.

I read the New York Times to keep up with the dominant ideology. Speaking of which, it's important to note that "your average joe paper" is not free of ideology and self-censorship.
(Thomas Friedman is a bloated bag of empty gas but I like Paul Krugman a lot. I wouldn't guillotine him after the Revolution ;))

I don't think anyone was claiming otherwise. However, ignoring these articles under the blanket pretext of 'bourgie media' is deductive suicide.

Almost any news best read from several sources. As far as news is concerned, Xinhua seems to be the most neutral and to the point, though it's not terribly informative while the Guardian is pretty good. RT, Al-Jazeera and VoA have solid reporting if you can sift the propaganda.
Most leftist sites are more editorial and analysis and tend to focus on politics - Common Dreams is my favorite, Democracy Now is decent as is Truthout. Some people would say Mother Jones is good, but it's just a more serious version of HuffPo in my opinion. Alternet and Raw Story are sort of like Fox for the left - they aren't terribly concerned with accuracy or quality but it's entertaining and usually has a few good articles.
Black Agenda Report, Tom Dispatch, and Znet are also very good. Venezuelanalysis & Council on Hemispheric Affairs (Latin and S. America) are good for editorials and analysis. I would recommend those sites to everyone.

Yeah, I don't get his love for North Korea.
North Korea hasn't been pro-commy since the 70s, he acknowledges that, yet he still supports them.
Now ok he does say the thing about a country's right to resist imperialism, but that only goes so far.

I'm cool with disagreeing with people but MRN is actually embarrassing to watch and frankly doesn't know what he's talking about re: anything.
Anyway, I don't have too much to add in the way of left-leaning sources. wsws is okay, socialistworker is alright, then you have your lame left-liberal sites e.g. alternet.
libcom.org is pretty damn good, for what it is.
EDIT: kinda surprised no one mentioned "Democracy Now"

Red Phoenix used to be pretty good if you wanted the Marxist-Leninist view of things, but nowadays they don't bother writing their own stuff anymore, they just copy+paste articles.
There's still a lot of good theoretical articles if you go digging through the archives.

I'm surprised to see people taking Maoist Rebel News seriously. This is the guy who recently made videos about Mortal Kombat from a Marxist perspective and a video about Miley Cyrus. Seriously, ho watch those, they're hilarious.

Hey - I think I'm going to start working on a proper media sticky!
If people want to help by doing a few things when posting about media, it would be great!
1. Provide a link.
2. Say where the media is based.
3. Its scope (local, national, continental, interplanetary - whatever).
4. If it is affiliated with a larger organization (provide a link).
Example:
BASICS Community News Service (http://basicsnews.ca/) (Toronto, Local) - affiliated with the International League of Peoples' Struggles (http://ilps.info).
THANKS!

there are also anarchist news sites that cover local news, they pop up for about a year or two or three and then stop being updated

I don't want to be a jerk about this, but there are already many sources listed in this thread that I'll have to figure out all of the appropriate information for. I'm not so masochistic as to want to do it for every magazine anyone likes. If you'd like to see something on the list, please meet me halfway and include all of the details.
this isn't even your thread (I didn't even read your request post until I read your jerk post here)
