The Cultural Revolution was not really a single event and had a diverse range of activists with different goals. Mao himself said that only "5%" of the Party was "bad" and had to be challenged, which suggests he wanted a limited campaign against "capitalist-roaders". The ultraleft took almost a Trotskyist line (as noted by Tony Cliff), calling for a commune-state, but it was sidelined by Mao. In reality the CR was a burst of activity in the mid-to-late 1960s that quickly led to chaos and was defused by Mao by balancing between the military, the capitalist-roaders, and the Gang of Four types. This set the stage for the right-wing in foreign policy (meeting with Nixon) which was followed by the fall of the Gang of Four and the rise of Deng Xiaoping.

This thread needs some Ismail. That's probably what is good about Hoxha.

In all seriousness, the Cultural Revolution had good qualities, and in theory, was interesting. In practice and intention, however, it was a hellhole cult of personality.
