Havana, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) During talks with Colombian government representatives in the Cuban capital, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-Peoples Army (FARC-EP) on Tuesday proposed setting up a peoples power body, as part of a package of initiatives to ensure the political and social participation of excluded sectors of Colombias population.
The peoples power body would be recognized by the Constitution and based on the principles of autonomy and sovereignty, FARC representative Andres Paris said at the Palacio de Convenciones, Havanas international conference center, the venue for talks since they began in November of last year.
The new body would comprise social and popular sectors, indigenous and African descendants, women, youth, LGBT communities, wage workers and workers in the informal economy, and other organized popular sectors, he said.
According to the FARC, the idea for the peoples power body is based on the peoples aspirations to truly exercise democracy, and recognition of the peoples ability to oversee practical issues and to influence political, economic, and social decisions, among others. The FARC-EP also put forward a proposal to recognize and guarantee the political and social participation of rural communities.
The FARC and the government are currently debating political participation, the second item on the agenda for their talks, after reaching partial agreement in late May on agricultural issues
