posted: 25 feb 2013

Referred to the decision of the Committee for the Defence of workers’ rights in the oil sector, which was made in the demonstration that was held on February 13, 2013 and in response to the negligence of the officials of the South Oil Company, approximately 1500 workers of the foreign companies in the fields of Rumaila and Albrjsuh and West Qurna, as well as in the company's headquarters in Bab Al-Zubair staged a demonstration on Tuesday 19/02/2013 in front of the South Oil Company.
As a result the police barricaded the road leading to the company's headquarters, where hundreds of workers gathered and chanted for changing the company's management and the implementation of the workers demands. As the tension ran high, more troops armed with heavy machinery were called to attend the scene which led the leaders of the demonstration to convince the police not to instigate any issue till they meet with the officials. 5 hours into the event, the governor of Basra (Sabah Albazoony) along with Iraqi MP (Suzan Alsaad) showed up on the scene to whom the leaders of the demonstration spoke and submitted the workers demands.
Mr. Albazoony requested a time to look into the demands to which both parties agreed till Sunday 02/24/2013 to meet the demands of workers otherwise the workers will resume their demonstrations on Tuesday 26/02/2013.
as well, and since punishing the leaders of demonstrations has become a common practice carried out by the government, the workers demanded that such action must stop and will not be tolerated to which the governor has agreed. Following this conversation, the workers chose 6 representatives to participate in the negotiation.
