For some reason I get the feeling that these folks are the same types who sit back and yell "shame!!!" at the cops as the cops club the others in the street.

Whoever it is, I think they are doing a fine thing. However, I believe you are mistaken.

First, as far as I know there is no "Revolutionary Student Union" at the City University of New York (CUNY).

Second, as far as I know, the educational encounter with War Criminal Petraeus shown in the video took place after a protest of around 100 CUNY students and faculty outside the general's first class.

The protest was organized by a united front "Ad-Hoc Committee Against the Militarization of CUNY," set up for the purpose of organizing such protests against Petraeus and ROTC. The main groups participating in the committee are the CUNY Internationalist Clubs and the Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee (RSCC). The Internationalist Clubs are Marxist-Leninists, that is to say, Trotskyists. I'm not sure if the RSCC officially claims to be "Marxist-Leninist" but some of its most prominent activists claim to be some sort of Maoists. Now if you ask me, Maoists are Stalinists, that is, they are anti-Marxist, anti-Leninists. But obviously most people in the RSCC would not share my opinion about that.

Nice to see him hassled; I hope it steps up. I wonder if they have his home address? I wonder if they can force him to resign?

Protests Cause CUNY to Move War Criminal’s “Class” to High-Security Building 429

David “Death Squad” Petraeus, Out of CUNY Now!

OCTOBER 4 – After four consecutive weeks of protests against its hiring of ex-CIA chief David Petraeus, the administration of the City University of New York has responded by moving his Macaulay Honors College seminar to a new location: the BMW Building at 555 West 57th Street. According to administration memos published by the “Gawker” website, Petraeus’ seminar – “Are We On the Threshold of the North American Decade?” – will be held on the highly securitized 16th floor of the building, which is part of CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The previous schedule of 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Mondays is slated to continue. According to press reports, a key feature of this new location is its secured parking garage, which would allow Petraeus to come and go without having to encounter protesters. As the “Gawker” site notes: “It’s not clear whether other CUNY classes have ever been placed under such security.”

Together with CUNY students and faculty, labor and anti-racist activists have joined with many other opponents of imperialist war abroad and repression at home to protest CUNY’s provocative political decision to hire this certified war criminal, who as Iraq/Afghanistan war commander oversaw the creation of death squads and a network of torture centers. As documented by the British Guardian, Petraeus’ specialist in this grisly work was Colonel James Steele, who had worked closely with the notorious military and paramilitary death units that ravaged Central America.

The change in the seminar’s location is but a small victory emerging from persistent struggle on both coasts. The seminar move comes after a protest by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in the “March Forward!” group at the University of Southern California, resulting in the cancellation of a private luncheon Petraeus was scheduled to hold there. CUNY activists have proclaimed their solidarity with those at USC, who have expressed indignation that David “Death Squad” Petraeus was appointed to be a “veterans’ adviser” there. Petraeus has also declared his intention to “mentor” members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), whose return to CUNY is another focus of the ongoing protests.

The seminar move also comes after the violent NYPD arrest of six protesters at the September 17 Macaulay fundraiser that featured Petraeus as a keynote speaker. At the City University and beyond, outrage has been expressed at the use of brutal police repression on behalf of war criminal Petraeus. A “Statement of Support to CUNY Students” attacked at the September 17 protest has been signed by hundreds of academics, while the Professional Staff Congress, the union representing 25,000 CUNY faculty and staff, passed a “PSC Resolution in Protest of Violent Police Response to Peaceful Protest by CUNY Students” by unanimous vote of the union’s Delegate Assembly.

On September 30, when two of the CUNY Six were invited to address a PSC “Contract Now!” rally in front of the CUNY Board of Trustees' meeting at Baruch College, they got an enthusiastic response from union members as they explained the goals of the struggle. The repression unleashed against protesters shows “a fundamental fact,” emphasized one organizer of the anti-militarization campaign: “Petraeus’ backers cannot answer the documented truth about his actions as CIA chief and war commander – so they send enforcers in blue to try to silence our voice. But the truth of our message will not and cannot be silenced by the NYPD’s billy clubs, choke holds and fists.”

An Ad Hoc Committee spokeswoman stated: “We want to express our gratitude to supporters, near and far, for taking a firm stand against the militarization of our schools. In light of these developments, we are even more determined to oust Petraeus and ROTC through protest and exposure.” In the following weeks it will be crucial to continue spreading the word about developments in this struggle to defend the university from a targeted campaign of imperialist militarism and police-state repression. We invite groups and individuals in solidarity with this struggle to keep mobilizing for protests outside of Petraeus’ sinister “class."

All those who defend students’ basic right to protest and oppose police brutality are encouraged to attend a public meeting on Tuesday, October 15, calling to “Defend the CUNY Six – Drop the Charges Now!” Lending vocal support is crucial, as two of the CUNY 6 will have their first court appearance on October 17th. The public meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, in the New Building of John Jay College, 524 West 59th Street, Room 9.64 (9th floor). Press are invited.

A key protest will occur on October 16th at a John Jay gala, where Petraeus will be “honored” as a featured speaker on – “Educating for Justice” (!). (More details to come.) We call on all opponents of militarization to join in building the mobilization to oust Petraeus and ROTC through massive protest and exposure.

CUNY must not be a war college! War Criminal Petraeus, ROTC, Military Contracts and Military Recruiters: Out of CUNY! Defend the CUNY 6! Drop all charges now!

War criminal David Petraeus confronted in Los Angeles

Jail Petraeus! Free the CUNY 6!

On Oct. 8 protesters gathered at a busy street corner to denounce the recent hiring of war criminal Gen. David Petraeus as the University of Southern Califonia’s new veteran affairs advisor. Petraeus was speaking at a conference for student veterans when protesters held up signs that read “Jail Petraeus!” and “Petraeus lied, women and children died!”

Petraeus is known in military circles as a counter-insurgency expert and is praised by war mongers for utilizing the “double-tap” method where drones conduct second strikes on rescue workers and victims’ funerals. Petraeus has committed a number of other war crimes —from ordering and facilitating illegal torture, to intentionally creating civil war in Afghan villages, to covering-up the murder of Iraqis by U.S. defense contractors. Hundreds of USC students, faculty and passers-by took flyers in support of the protest and agreed that it was egregious for Petraeus to be on the university’s payroll.

Shortly before the demonstration at USC, six City University of New York students were assaulted and arrested for protesting Petraeus’ appointment to the school’s faculty. (http://www.answercoalition.org/national/news/drop-all-charges-against-the-cuny-6.html) Appointing Petraues to any position in any institution of higher learning adds to the problem of on-campus recruitment and militarization in schools. Students, veterans and anti-war activists are determined to continue to put pressure on Petraeus and these school administrations. Fire Petraues! Free the CUNY 6!

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, what's the most that can happen here, making him feel mildly uncomfortable?

Well, what are they supposed to do? Physically threaten him? Not that he isn't a criminal. I think depriving him of any additional platform he might find is a worthy cause.

Of course not, but you're missing the point entirely. Waving signs and doing a big SHAME ON YOU isn't going to deprive him of anything, as you can see from the above article, they simply moved his class to a more secluded area. That these activists consider that any kind of "victory" is shameful.

again what do you suggest be done in confronting this war criminal? do nothing and just post behind a computer? I know write an article that only your tiny group of radicals will read

What confrontation? What's happening here besides activists holding signs, then feeling good about themselves for "doing something"? Not every situation has an easy solution, and "at least we're doing something" is a piss-poor justification for symbolic "sending-a-message" type activism.

I think the students who confronted Petraeus after his first class did a fine thing.

Of course to actually drive out this war criminal, and moreover to defeat the system he helps to administer, will take the mobilization of a superior class force.

One item of note is that the teachers union of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who have been on strike since August of this year, just passed a resolution in support of the "CUNY 6." See the attached document and an English translation below.

---

Union of Education Workers of the State of Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Motion of Solidarity from Striking Education Workers with the Six Youth Arrested in Violent Attack by New York Police on Protest Against War Criminal David Petraeus

We education workers in the Rio de Janeiro State Network are on strike to defend the most basic rights of students, education workers, and the working-class population, against attacks on public education.

The violent response of the ruling class was shown once again on October 1st, when our strike was violently attacked by the police. We are passing this resolution to express our solidarity with the students and workers who were violently repressed and arrested by the New York police during a protest against the militarization of the largest urban public university in the United States, CUNY (the City University of New York).

As part of capital’s world offensive against public education, CUNY is the target of a campaign of open militarization, combined with tuition hikes and other measures aimed against students from poor, working-class, black, Latino and immigrant families.

The center of this militarization campaign, at the present time, is the CUNY administration’s decision to hire, as a “professor,” the former head of the CIA, and former commander of the imperialist wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, David Petraeus (originally offering him a salary of US$200,000 to “teach” three hours a week for one semester).

Petraeus is a war criminal who directed the creation of death squads and torture centers in Iraq, using for this task Colonel James Steele, who worked directly with the death squads that carried out the extermination of peasants, workers and indigenous people in Central America. As head of the CIA, Petraeus directed drone attacks against civilian populations, and as head of the war against Iraq and Afghanistan he was responsible for the imperialist forces’ massacre of thousands of people. The CUNY administration has also reinstituted the armed forces’ Reserve Officers Training Corps.

On September 17, a protest against an event by Petraeus and representatives from high levels of the bourgeoisie was violently attacked by the New York police. Brutally beating students, the police arrested six demonstrators, who are now facing false charges in the courts.

Here in Brazil, we workers and youth have direct knowledge of the meaning of those three bloody letters: C.I.A. This infamous agency of spying and assassinations participated directly in the organization of the 1964 military coup, which led to more than two decades of terror in Brazil, and also established a pattern for other dictatorships throughout the region. We know very well what is meant by the militarization of education, which was carried out to its full extent here during those years. We know in our own flesh (em carne própria) the meaning of the death squads sponsored by the CIA and the local bourgeoisies, in their dirty wars against the unions, the workers, the peasants and students.

The cause of the struggle against these war criminals, and against the militarization of the schools and universities, extends from New York to Brazil! From the picket lines of our strike, we send our international solidarity with the “CUNY Six” and with all those who protest against militarization and imperialist war criminals. Together with you, we say: Defend the CUNY Six! Drop all the charges! Stop the militarization of schools and universities!
