A disturbing story emerged out of the Bronx on Thursday. Two Muslim sisters, Lamis Chapman and Khalia Wilson, aged 12 and 14 respectively, told the New York Daily News that they were thrown to the ground, put in chokeholds, and had their hijabs violently torn off by members of the NYPD, for a reason that remains unclear.

Chapman and Wilson said they were playing handball around 9:30 pm in the park near their home in the Lester Patterson Houses in Mott Haven, the Bronx, when police approached them and asked them to leave, as the park was closed.

The girls recounted that the cops followed them out of the park, and one grabbed Wilson from behind, putting her in a chokehold and wrestling her to the ground. "They said they asked for ID. I didn't hear them," reported Wilson. When her sister protested, she was also thrown to the ground, and both sisters' headscarves were ripped off.

"I kept saying, 'I'm 14! What are you doing? We're not bad kids,'" explained Wilson.

When their 15-year-old brother, Shytike Wilson, saw the police assaulting his younger sisters from a window, he ran to their aid. "I asked them why my sisters were in handcuffs," he said, when the police, "charged me, picked me up, and slammed me on the floor."

An 18-year-old college student, Jonathan Harris, became involved when he heard the girls screaming and ran to the park to help. He told the cops to leave the teens alone and took out his cell phone to record the incident, but was also subjected to police abuse.

According to Harris, the officer told him, "Come here, you little motherf--er. You like recording?" He says he tried to run away, but was caught and thrown to the ground, getting pepper-sprayed and punched in the face during the struggle.

A police source painted a wholly different picture, reports the New York Daily News. "The officers told the kids to leave (the park) when they began acting disorderly," said the source, who added that the police were escorting the teens out of the park when Harris grabbed one of the girls away from the cops.

Harris was charged with "disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental function," and the police reported that two officers were hospitalized with "scrapes, bruises, and sprains." The NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is reportedly looking into the incident.

The incident comes in the wake of a stream of bad publicity for the NYPD, as they face criticism for controversial stop-and-frisk policies and widespread surveillance of Muslims in their religious communities.

The police are a bunch of horrible bigots. I can't stand the liberal rhetoric that the police aren't bad. They're bad, they're oppressive, they're racist. The whole system is. That's why so many cops are incredibly right-wing and fascist. They get to beat minorities and women (a *12* year old girl!!). And who is to investigate these crimes? Fellow police officers. That's just insane!

I think this may have been an effect of the overall anti-Muslim activities of the NYPD, such as their spying on Muslim students at local universities, and monitoring of Mosques and Muslim religious activities. It's just so awful and a complete waste of time and resources. I think it is promoting anti-Muslim feelings.

How the fuck do these shits get away with this?

Assaulting a twelve year old!? For slowly leaving the playground? That should land them in fucking jail for a few decades, yet their asses always seem to fucking get off! Not defending US prison systems, but how the fuck is it that someone smoking marijuana on the side of the road can get a blimp on their record and a few years in a cell whereas these blatantly racist, child-beating, power-tripping savage thugs avoid prosecution?

This shit pisses me off.

Is it common in the US for 12 year olds to carry ID? Also, there is just no fucking excuse for what I presume were fairly large men in the NYPD to use any force whatsoever against a 12 or 14 year old girl. Just sounds like a racist attack, especially since they took off the girls' headscarves.

Terrible - not unheard of. The presense of police in schools has led to many incidents I've read about where police handcuff or hold down really young kids for doing things you'd expect young kids (younger than 12) to do: tantrums, screaming, etc.

Not to downplay the systemic side of policing at all (the profiling and spying that others have mentioned), but a lot of new cops are also vets and I also wonder what the impact of the Iraq and Afganistan war has done for policing in regards to people with arab apperance or in this case clothing associated with Islam.

Anyway totally disgusting - and the way they always send the cops to the doctor after the mistreat someone as a legal cover for anything they do. Ooh, the cop's knuckles were bruised, so obviously they beat that guy to a pulp in self defense.

no, most teens under 18 usually don't have government id in the us. there was no reason for them to have assumed these girls had id.

In this instance they may've been referring to IDs showing they lived at those projects. That being said I don't think kids that young usually are expected to have ID for this.

A lot of police mess goes on like this as we know. What really gets me is when they try to justify it with the claims of police being injured while trying to serve this warrant. This is just stupid, what's worse is it'll be perpetuated by the fears of the city's comfortable upper middle-class. NYPD we've already seen abuse the trust of the muslim community as well as other minorities, and most recently with them having to put aside their blatantly racist use of stop-and-frisk.

The guy that won the NYC Democratic mayoral primary, Bill De Blasio, has been extremely critical of the racist shenanigans of the NYPD under Bloomberg and Giuliani. He's going to win, NYC is sick of Republicans. He's definitely a good guy and a progressive, Wall Street despises him.
