I've been, in the past few years, a massive drinker of skimmed milk. I love it. But i'm a bit worried - a cursory search of the internet seems to suggest it's not as healthy as you might think.

i know it has a very high sugar content, but it doesn't seem that calorific, and I thought in terms of micro-ingredients - vitamins etc. - it would have health benefits, compared to semi-skimmed and whole milk.

What do people think? I'm having trouble when googling in separating out myth, sensationalism and fact.

I think the main reason for skim is the low fat content (thus whole, 2%, & skim). I doubt it's doing much harm; I was raised on the two lower fat ones (whole is so *thick* in consistency). Soy, rice, & almond milks are high in sugar usually, as well. Not sure about goat (which I have heard is better but only word of mouth). The main thing is humans consume another animals milk, which really is kind of weird.

I really don't think it matters if you enjoy it & it doesn't affect your way of life, sugars & calories are in everything, so find what you enjoy.

Apparently milk in general isn't as healthy as it was widely believed to be. http://www.webmd.com/diet/healthy-kitchen-11/dairy-truths

I've been drinking skim milk, instead of whole milk, for years, and I am not aware of any health problems. I am in better shape than I was after Navy book camp. I'm no scientist, but it seems to me that skim must be healthier than whole milk, simply because, with skim, all that fat is gone; I do not plan to go back to whole milk; skim tastes a lot better.

skim milk has 13 grams of sugar, so does any and all cow's milk i have ever encountered in the midwest us. there may be other nutrient counts elsewhere, skim milk is thinner and lower fat content. it's safe enough. studies show that stool samples collected from people with higher dairy intake tend to have more fat content suggesting that you absorb less fat from your diet.
**13 grams per label serving, also different types of sugars are processed differently, as are carbohydrates in general**

Here in the Deep South, skim has 12 grams of sugar per serving, while whole milk has 11. So, as far as I can tell, there's not a whole lot of difference. If I had to guess, I would think that avoiding the fat in milk is probably not a bad idea, though I obviously don't know very much about it.

Fun fact: there can legally be up to an eye-dropper full of puss in one glass of milk. It's called somatic cell count.

Same here! I used to drink skim milk all the time until studying it more on the Internet. Nowadays, I drink almond milk and occasional whole milk. It's hard to go back to skim milk after a year and a half of drinking almond. It tastes watery. But, as for skim milk being unhealthy, I'm not sure. I've never asked a real doctor about it. From research, it seems like it's missing some key vitamins that you'd get a better portion of in whole milk.

Half and half is usually for coffee and has a high fat content. Skim milk has most of its fat removed and is usually considered the "healthiest" option as far as bovine milk is concerned.
