Anglo-Dutch firm Unilever says it has ordered the withdrawal of a Flora margarine advertisement in South Africa that has been condemned as homophobic.
The advert features a bullet with the words "Uhh dad I'm gay" flying towards a heart made of china.
The advert, on a pink background, includes the tagline "You need a strong heart today" near the Flora logo.
Flora, owned by Unilever, has long promoted its margarine as helping consumers maintain a healthy heart.
"This advert was prepared by an external agency in South Africa and was not approved by anyone at Unilever," the company said on its Twitter feed.

Disgusting.

I'm honestly not surprised though. Homophobia is alive and well in Southern Africa, especially from the more fundamentalist sectors of the population.

I have seen some mugabe-leaning machismo shit on youtube by a South African guy about the 'feminisation of black South Africans and the destruction of traditional values' where he goes on about homosexuals being a foreign and destructive force that destroys happy patriarchal Christian Africa, but then again it's youtube so I don't know how widespread that belief is in reality.

Also, why is 'homophobic' in apostrophes? I don't see how an ad made to appeal to emotion, which presents someone's heart 'shattering' once they hear their child is gay, can be seen as anything else.

Sorry, was quoting from the headline on BBC News site, they often use apostrophes because they're quoting from the stroy rather than as a way of offering their opinion on the topic (I think they are aware it is categorically homophobic)

MOD - any way the apostrophes could be removed?

Done - although in future if you need to edit the title of a thread, you can click "edit" at the bottom corner of the OP and then click "go advanced" and you should be able to edit the title from there :)
