Most discussion of policies for dealing with child abuse and paedophilia actually ignores the views of children.

And here, for me, is the unpalatable answer: we don't listen to child victims or know how they have tried to overcome abuse because we don't listen to children. Not only do we think they should be "seen and not heard", but they are also increasingly disliked, scapegoated and hated by an adult world that has turned young people into the human equivalent of dangerous dogs. We want our children as passive, quiet, grateful, designer accessories to suit our needs and to reflect well on our sense of self. Heaven help the kid who shows a mind of its own and dares to have a view at variance to the received wisdom of the "grown-ups".

agreed, this can be linked to capitalism in a way. the baby boomers are the ones who do this shit, i see it so often. They are the most self centered generation around, more concerned with their careers.

It's quite funny how relatives of many children fight the war against child abuse from parents or guardians in the name of protecting their childrens future yet at the same time they allow the children very little voice in where they want to go and who they wish to be their legal guardian in the aftermath, other people decide for the children.

That statement is true on so many levels. It can be extended right outside of the issues of child abuse and paedophilia -- extended to the relationship between a parent or guardian, and a child.

If you ask me whether anyone in my family knows of my anarchist and atheist views, you will find that the answer is 'no'.

And why? Because I cannot open my mouth. I have to be passive, quiet, grateful and 'perfect', for fear of receiving a nasty backlash.

But apparently, I am not very grateful. And I have a parent who wonders why. On such occasions, I am reminded that I am not supporting myelf, so I should 'shut up and be grateful. The door is there.'

And it turns out that I am not the perfect designer accessory that I was meant to be, either. Right down from my personality, to my body shape, I am an eyesore. I am constantly reminded of that too, whether that be verbally or with body language.

Being passive and quiet is the bare minimum that can 'save' me.

Nice quote. Such an analysis is bringing us one step closer to stamping out ageism.

If you want to be free, once you are 16, declare yourself emancipated and live by yourself

Whahaha, most of the baby boomers in this country were the same ones who wanted to have a revolution, so you can just as easily link it to socialism.

A child should be allowed its own views and allowed to speak them. If we ignore them or do not allow them the freedoms we haev in teenage and adult life, then they will be severely disadvantaged in the adult world.

People who abuse their children are some of the world's most disgusting scum. They are your children! A parent has a responsibility to look after their child and ensure he or she will grow up to be a open-minded, intelligent and compassionate member of society.

Or you could blame it on bourgeois electoral ceremonies, the main cause of disillusionment.

And anyway, they are of the old Leninist generation; anarchism is gaining more credibility among the young, and anarchism doesn't involve disheartening bourgeois reformism.

When can you legally leave Your Home?...16
"Emancipation" is a legal term meaning that a child is no longer subject to his parents' authority: he no longer has to obey them and they no longer have to care of him. but the law obviously cannot control private family relationships. Even if there were an ideal legal formula for family relationships, reality would not: a rich seventeen-year-old in Beverly Hills who has his own car and football scholarship to UCLA has a very different set of relations and obligations to his family than a seventeen-year-old in Watt§ who is in the eighth grade, has no father, and works after school to support his mother and sister...still, tho the law cannot actually control private relationships like these, it does try regulate certain minimum obligations: support, custody, parental authority.
If these rights are to be enforced in practice you will need an adult* friend, guardian, lawyer, or parent—to act/on your behalf:
as a minor you have...technically, no legal standing and can take~no legal action without an adult to act for you. <—Up Against The Law [the legal rights of people under21] by Jean Strouse 1970
under the EnglishLanguage...
dictionary definition for emancipate:

1.To free from oppression or bondage.
2.To free from any restraint~to set a man free from slavery or tutelage.
