View Full Version : ISO Signs Confiscated by DC Cops?

From this article (http://www.thenation.com/blog/175890/seeing-new-jim-crow-placards-seized-police-more-march-washington):

The day was symbolized for me on multiple levels by seeing DC Park police seize 200 professionally printed placards from activists that were distributing them for free. The placards read, Stop Mass Incarceration. Stop the new Jim Crow. Police said that it was unlawful solicitation, even though they were clearly giving them away. When those having their signs seized complained, they were threatened with fines or arrest. I heard one DC police officer say, Hey, you can get them back at the end of the day. On second thought, given your attitude you cannot.

Is he referring to this sign (the one on the right)?

Confirmation and additional information is appreciated.

No I haven't heard any details or anything - most of the chit-chat today on the west coast was about the 9 year old kid being Kanye-ed by the AFT union speaker when he started talking against charter schools. (Edit: this might be some speculation by comrades... I didn't hear or watch the rally and I read elsewhere that he was cut-off, but I don't know if it was because of anything political, it's unclear from the other reports which mostly seemed offended because a young kid was cut off but didn't mention what he was talking about).

It's a little unusual for cops to be that petty in such a public protest, but then again not really. I was detained by California Capitol police when I went to a education protest and was handing out Oscar Grant protest flyers (it was like a week or two after he was killed). Even though I was in Sacramento, some 100 miles from Oakland, the cop stoped me explicitly and solely for handing out those fliers. He tried to tell me it was illegal to hand out "off-topic" material at the education protest. I wish someone had filmed it because he called his superior while he made me wait in his car and I could hear the higher-up groaning and trying to think of a legitimate reason to hold me and then he was like... "Oscar Grant!? Ahhh, ahh, um, well, no... we can't really hold him for that...".

The more surprising thing about it is that the cops and Democrats didn't just try and use the organizers to try and mute anything like that in the crowd - they seem to have done that for the stage.

I haven't heard anything besides that article, either. A cursory google search didn't yield much. That said, I wouldn't put it past them (the cops, that is).

Isn't that what cops do? They take your shit. They personally owe me 3 blowhorns and a PA.
you can probably add 3 or 4 card tables. Not to mention all the people that have had broken arms, dislocated limbs and fractures from demos or rallys that were permitted and not even that much out of control. I had one friend arrested at a permitted demo and when they released her they returned her backpack with all the cables to her phone, camera and ipod etc cut in half. Something about a potential bomb threat. I'm sure they laughed about it.

Did anyone see when they arrested Amy Goodman at the RNC and ripped her press pass off while she was in handcuffs. That was classic pigs in action.

I'll bet there's a lot "wtf" stories that can be told the users on this forum. I wonder how many people on this forum haven't been maced.

No, but thank you for that helpful contribution to the OP's question...
