To return to original topic: would we still drink these if they weren't alcohol? I say yes. I could drink more of them. Dirty Bastard is a 3 bottle limit but so tasty I don't think about stopping. Also, my grandpa loved non-alcoholic beer because he liked the taste but was an alcoholic, so this gave him some enjoyment without being a nasty drunk. My grandma likes it but she hates the feeling of being drunk, so it suits her needs.

It's because according to the bottle, Erdinger Alkoholfrei is an isotonic sports drink, full of vitamins!
I've drunk non-alcoholic beer when I've been driving or long-distance cycling (not always when it comes to the latter I'll admit) but I'll usually take the full-fat version. Besides, as an ale drinker there's usually not a non-alcoholic option. In any case, i do actually like alcohol both as a flavour/sensation and for what it does to me.

Since alcohol has a flavour of it's own that contributes to the overall flavour of a beverage even in small amounts, how can one remove the alcohol from beer without changing that?
I've not had non-alcoholic beer, but I've had malted barley drinks and they taste noticeably different. They lack that "bite" that even mild (3-4% ABV) beers have.

Most non-alcoholic beers taste like crap, but if you found one which tastes a bit like beer (i think Carlsbergs tastes a bit like Carlsbergs with alcohol, which propably just means that Carlsberg isn't that good of a beer) it can be pretty good with meat and potatoes. It's good for us people whom gets hungover for two days after every beerdrinking event.

Pretty much agree with this sentiment. The closest thing for a hangover cure I can think of is a nice fried breakfast. Bacon and eggs, hashbrowns, etc.
But that's only if you can manage to drag yourself out of the house to the local diner. Because nobody is going to cook it themselves.

He can't afford to now because he had a tear in his esophagus and doesn't want it to happen again, so he has to be safe with what he drinks. I honestly don't see the point though personally of "drinking beer for the taste", because it tastes horrible to me.

I don't think mickey's is that strong and when I drink malt liquor I am drinking it for the alcohol content only hoping to black out before the oily wretchedness of it catches me. I usually do old english or steel reserve but I'd rather spend a bit more on a bottle of liquor. Of course this is all hilarious because if you remember I am not even supposed to be drinking/drugs I am supposed to be working out and eating healthy. Just like my 'photo album cooking pictures' idea from several years ago or whenever the thread lasted like two days and I never looked at it again because in order to take good photographs of food that you have cooked you have to have a nice camera a step that I missed.
I will spend $$ on craft pumpkin beers though. I am too ashamed to even mention how much I will drop on really good beers like that.

Kind of late to the party here, and I might be taking this too literally, but the greatest discovery I have come across in my lifetime of alcohol use is that drinking a glass of water between every beer, glass, or shot will completely prevent you from having any kind of hangover whatsoever. It's been proven that there's no such thing as a hangover cure, only hangover prevention. (Of course, drinking more is a "cure" in the same way that Vicodin is a "cure" for a broken leg.)

I disagree. I want to drink something tasty. If its alcoholic, I don't consume it to get drunk but for the taste. If the goal was to get drunk, there would be a high alcohol content crap tasting beer that ruled the market. I want the flavor of porters, stouts, & ales. I drink whiskey but only 2 kinds, because I like how they taste. It might be snobby sounding (connoisseur like) but even when on a budget, I'm picky & if I cannot afford the tasty drink I enjoy, I don't drink (yes, a tall Budweiser or even a labatt's is ok in a pinch). I was raised to enjoy flavor over effect. I've honed that over 17 years

I don't get the hating on the taste of beer. I find the bitterness refreshing, like the bitter taste of coffee can be. The tastes can be more complex, however; for example, the nature and degree of the foamy head has an effect on the flavour because the increased surface area, also releasing aromas when the bubbles burst.
Most beers are are made from wheat and/or barley, but I had a rather nice banana beer once.
Of course, I enjoy the alcoholic content, but lately these days I prefer to get lightly sozzled on decent quality stuff rather than utterly smashed on cheaper stuff.

As for the hangover thing, I've been told (mostly in the context of someone going on and on about drinking water, like me right now) that hangovers are just a really extreme form of dehydration.
