This song (supposedly) led to several suicides. The lyrics totally back this up.

I wouldn't say depressing necessarily, but certainly melancholic.

Damn! That's who I was gonna mention. A friend of mine loved "Dummy" and would listen to it constantly. They have a few good songs but personally I prefer fast, exciting music over the kind of music Portishead does.

You're looking for anything from Giles Corey and Slint.

I've got a big music collection and a pretty good chunk of it is varying shades of depressing from gently mopey stuff to outright suicide anthems.

anyway here's a spectacularly maudlin tune by The Black Heart Procession.

there's so much more. these are the main songs i would listen to when i was depressed. it's hard for me to listen to them now because there's a strange kind of nostalgia attached to them, and then i just end up being depressed again which i'm trying to avoid at all costs.

I feel like posting a song so explicitly about depression is sorta cheating but, there ya go.

They're all amazing and beautiful, but very sad.

The Smiths:
Never Had No One Ever
I Know It's Over
Asleep
This Night Has Opened My Eyes
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Lou Reed:
Perfect Day
The Bed

and many more...

I always found alot of Elliot Smith's music both hauntingly depressed as well as beautiful. Plus the dude had a pretty messed up life and eventually committed suicide by stabbing himself in the chest with a steak knife.

depressing as hell even if you don't understand the lyrics.

Well I think anyone my age who listened to rock or punk when they were younger probably is affected by this song, even if the lyrics aren't really depressing: it's the medoldy and the cultural connotation since it was used as Kurt Cobain's last testiment in pop culture:

0LFVQpDKHk4

"choking on the ashes of our enemies"... see not that depressing as far as lyrics go;).

But as far as depressing lyrics go here's a sad hip-hop song about the dead-end choices of captialism:

QvR7UTrWMF8

And Bob Dylan has several compleations worth of desvistatingly sad music covering everything from break-ups to capitalism and racism to the end of the world. "Hurricane" and the line about petty fools having power over peoples lives always gets me; Hard Rain is apocalyptically sad; "It's all over now Baby Blue" is melodically sad, "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Caroll" is as sad as the title sounds, but also cathartically indignant and furious by the last verse; but I think I'll go with this one right now:

Has anyone ever heard of doom metal? Legends say that allowing your ears but five seconds of its bleak despaired sounds will drive even the strongest, noblest men to a brutal suicide.
So it might be something, sort of, in a way, perhaps what this thread is looking for

I think Justin Beiber and One Direction are pretty depressing.

In a good way.
Anyways, I think Current 93 and Throbbing Gristle are really sad. A lot of music that tries really hard to come off as sad has no emotional subtlety so it comes off unconvincing.
