The article on wikipedia describes them as "ultra-leftist". Is this just someone being a comedian or is there a legitimate reason to describe them as such? If so, what is it?

Because they are more leftist than most political parties in India?

It's not used in the sense of being slander for left-coms and anarchists. It's being used by Indian state media to demonise their members in unions as 'ultra, fringe, extremist' etc. and the citation for it comes from a Daily Mail tabloid of all places so no surprise there.

They aren't actually ultra-leftists. 'Ultra-leftist' in the articles' context is just a slanderous term to throw at the maoists by We-love-Osama American newspapers.

It's like Goldilocks.. some are tooooo hot.. some tooo cold.. some just right... That is, unfortunately, how most people throw around the terms.. here is an article that tries to explain the term in a more meaningful way: http://llco.org/comments-on-economism-right-and-left-errors/
