The Marxist programme is the crystallisation of the merger formula: It offers the way out of capitalism, based on an objective and scientific understanding of the way our society works, and offers it to the working class for it to accept as their very own compass towards liberation

Some comments: The left does need to take this question seriously. Most groups take themselves (or rather, the leaderships of these groups) as a "compass". If only it had influence to cheerlead the masses towards insurrection. No time to debate, sell those papers comrade! Build the organisation! ... This kind of behaviour leads to sects and opportunism though and it is no surprise that the wider working class movements in general just ignores the far left. Why would they take us seriously?

No, we need a different approach. A communist party is exactly the "merger" between the existing movement and the Marxist programme: Marxists do intervene in the existing movement, in whatever form, but recognise that these movements will run out of steam and dissipate (Occupy, et al) or become a part of the system (trade unions, labour parties). So, Marxists offer a vision to these movements in the form of a communist programme, a document that encapsulates our grand strategy for humanity. Marxists seek to convince the movement to accept this programme as theirs and thereby transform the movement into a party-movement.
