Photojournalist Anthony Karen documented his time with the Ku Klux Klan, particularly a klan wedding. (http://www.slate.com/blogs/behold/2013/08/13/anthony_s_karen_a_photojournalist_s_unrestricted_a ccess_to_the_ku_klux_klan.html)
Being a southerner, the subject of the KKK both fascinates and repulses me. They are such a big part of Southern history, but they're the part that just will not fucking die. They're like a particularly virulent strain of herpes that keeps showing up on the taint of American history.
....Btw, did anyone else notice the Dora the Explorer toy in the first picture? How's that for irony.

Hoo man, America history was tainted way before the KKK was born, The fact that they are a laughing stock today just show how irrelevant they are in general.

Thank you for sharing, I am also from the southern U.S, I have studied Klan history for quite some time, it is also something that I find very intriguing in a cultural sense from a Marxist perspective.

The pathos is so thick you could cut it with a WalMart bowie knife. Product of rural Missouri myself.

The guy to the far left in the second picture has a triforce on his robe. I wonder what his favorite Zelda game is.
Seriously though, thanks for sharing. I have always had a great interest in the KKK. Not sure why, theres just something about them. I´ve always found it strange how the organization associates itself with the religion of a jewish communist.

At least now we know what StormFront users look like in person :w00t:
Just looking at all those pictures proves the KKK should be called "Inbred hicks united".

Carl, an imperial wizard of a Southern-based Ku Klux Klan realm (or state-level group), takes aim with a pellet gun at a large cockroach (on the piece of paper just below the clock), while his wife and goddaughter try to avoid getting struck by a possible ricochet.

Interesting to see them close up in the present day and to justify my suspicions that they are idiots from the top of their Santa Claus hood to their shoes.
Also, shooting a cocroach with a pellet gun? That's an all time low for them.

I'm confused by the photo of the guy wearing a giant crucifix. I know their ideology is wrapped around Christianity, though I always was told they are anti catholic as well as anti Jewish, black, brown, etc... and have always associated the crucifix with the Catholic religion. Also from the photos you have shown, most of these people live in total poverty.

The KKK opened up it's membership to Catholics a while ago. I don't think there's much anti-papist rhetoric anymore.

Is this true? I'd always thought the original selling point of the KKK was that they were basically Protestant jihadis. I remember reading about how the core of their early action was killing and harassing catholics, Jews and dark-skinned people.
Did the groups just swap catholicism for communism as a political pincushion or something?

Well according to David Duke most of the membership of his Klan chapter in Louisiana were Catholic, so that's mostly what I base that on. I mean, when you think about it, the Klan is very much interested in recruitment, and their ideology intrinsically limits who they can recruit...couple that with demographic changes and strategically it doesn't make much sense to limit the potential recruiting pool even further.

Islamaphobia is no doubt taking the place of anti-papism now. The Klan's history quite likely is being re-written yet again. "The KKK, fighting sharia law since 1865."

i would guess it having something to do with catholic immigrants, ie italians and the irish, became white and were thus allowed membership.

Whenover I see pictures of the Ku Klux Klan I feel really sad for those people. It is obvious that they are dirt poor and that the Klan functions as a fantasy world where they can escape the troubles of daily life and pretend that they are "grand imperial wizards" instead of just poor nobodys.
If I were to go further the Ku Klux Klan is a monument to the failure of the left. The klansmen would be obvious candidates for joining revolutionary socialist groups. They are poor, despised by society and angry. However my impression is that these people have never been in contact with any serious presentation of socialism. Nobody from the left has bothered talking to them. Instead all political education they have comes from FOX news and right wing preachers.
This reminds me of the work of Jacob Holdt an antiracist photographer who travelled the United States. He has done some interesting work on the Ku Klux Klan that can be seen on http://www.kukluxklan.info/
His work on poverty and racism in general on http://www.american-pictures.com/ can also be recommended.

If you ask me, they're all damaged goods, their hearts and minds spoiled with hate, they are of no use to socialism. Maybe we can save their children, but not the older ones.

I think you are right about the old ones. Learning old dogs new tricks and all that. However I do think the group of poor rural whites have been overlooked by the left and that a serious attempt at agitation could have saved a lot of them from social pathologies like the Ku Klux Klan.
After all the economic conditions of the klansmen screams for socialism.

As some of you have already mentioned, there are definitely a few common traits with these men and women in the klan:
1. They are all living in depressing levels of poverty
2. They're all very rural, very backwoods-oriented individuals
3. Many come from rather troubling backgrounds involving broken families, absentee parents, drug addiction and petty crime.
4. They are all victims of the capitalist system who are desperate for a tangible, easy-to-grasp target for their rage. It's just that, in this case, the target they picked is grossly incorrect.
But the thing is, modern klans tend to operate like modern day street gangs, in that they specifically target the troubled, rural poor for recruitment. Many individuals who wised up and left the klan all tell the same story (see above).
