View Full Version : music that has a strange emotional effect on you

maybe happy music that makes you sad, or sad music that makes you happy, or music that overwhelms you, etc.
broadly 50s/60s beat music, rock'n'roll, girl groups, surf, northern soul, etc. tend to knock me for six. particularly stuff produced by phil spector. there's a song by the honeys called 'he's a doll' - written and produced by brian wilson no less - which could leave me weeping if i wasn't in the right frame of mind, despite seemingly being a gleeful declaration of love.

a lot of religious music has a strange resonance with me, despite being an atheist and materialist. particularly negro spirituals and gospel. i suppose it's to do with the sincerity of the singers, and the context the songs emerged from. there's a 1920s recording of 'i stood on de ribber ob jerdan' which isn't on youtube but gives me the chills whenever i listen to it. here's something a little similar:

The Billie Holliday version is good too but this has a haunting quality to it that makes it more powerful to me.

I could have dinner with him a few years ago, but didn't want to for some reason. Maybe I had to be somewhere else and would have had to bail part ways and it would have seemed rude.
There's an all night art event here every fall, and a few years ago he did a really cool installation in the Old City Hall, which is now the Court House (ha ha (been there for not fun reasons)) and he had these guitars on giant coils -- it was kind of Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome -- and people could pluck them and they were going through delay pedals and there were some other people playing gongs and they were on delays too. And there were projections of videos of just highway kinds of nothing just on the highway and he was videoing people there and that was getting mixed into the projections... It was very weird and cool.
Right beside was Daniel Lanois doing really crazy noise guitar stuff with a bunch of different people -- Feist, Broken Social Scene, when I heard Lanois I thought it was Ranaldo it was so skronky noisy and then Ranaldo was all dreamy atmospheric

This is one of the most recent songs which really hits me in the gut because of the melody... and the use of that keybord.
And some of the lyrics (I don't really know what the song is about, but the impressions created by some of the lines are well-done): "I want to live all the time in my fantasy infinity"... great sense of longing and loss or something - I don't know, it works for me.

'Run With Us' - Lisa Lougheed (from The Raccoons)
Sends a chill through me, plants a smile on my face and makes me want to dance 80's style.
'Dare' - Stan Bush (from The Transformers: The Movie)
Makes me 7 years old again and giddy with excitement.
'I Dreamed a Dream' - Various (from Les Miserables)
I cry every time, as I do with quite a few Les Mis songs.
'Mars, the Bringer of War' - Holst (from The Planets Suite)
First piece of classical music I ever listened to all the way through as a kid. I feel compelled to move and 'conduct' the piece in a very cack-handed and over-excited manner.

One of the best covers I've heard of this song:
yXsBtNcOAL0
I'd also add "The Beautiful Ones" by Prince and the Revolution... but apparently the revolution won't be on Youtube because of publishing rights.
And to balance out the pop songs above there's this 80s punk song though I have no idea what it's about. I think it's about fishing bait and nuclear war or something. It also takes a while for this song to really develop... or unravel. You mighrt be wondering how I know all these things... well, you see, I'm God!

'sexual healing' by marvin gaye is, for me, one of the saddest pieces of music ever recorded. people think it's about fucking, but if you listen to the words properly, and in the context marvin wrote 'em, it seems much more like a plea for help. that third verse in particular ('baby, i got sick this morning, a sea was storming inside of me', etc.)

I've been listening a lot lately to Dougie McLean particularly the album The Search which is a fantastic piece of work. One of the tracks on it was heavily 'sampled' (I guess that is the word for it) in the film The Last of the Mohicans, which I hadn't realised until I listened to the album and wondered where the hell I'd heard that violin part before.
Anyway, I really like the odd haunting element during the first half of the song and then the introduction of the folky element in the second half. I guess it helps that I'm going through a major folky stage at the moment. Anyway, here is it and if you don't like it then the problem is with you.

With german lyrics, I always tear up at the part of the anthem where it says 'So that the sun will shine as bright as never before over Germany', because that dream was killed by History and we may never get a chance again to try to make that alternative come true.

The Smiths - You've Got Everything Now...I honestly cannot find the words to explain the emotion this song feels me with. It's a mixture of sadness and joy that nothing else has ever made me feel. The song itself has such a happy vibe, but the lyrics seem so remorseful...as cheesy as this might sound, I always imagine it's about two lovers meeting again long after they've separated, and seeing how much their lives have changed. So each time I listen to this, I imagine that happening to me and my exes once we've all grown up and found new lives.

It's massive. So good. A lot of pain there, pretty obvious if you actually listen.
And considering what happened in his life and death, even more. Been listening to as part of soul jams mix -- even heavier in a different context. Thanks!

I've got a few but I can only really think of two off the top of my head.
This one I found on a fan video for some show I've never seen. I have no idea what the song is about but it made me tear up a bit when I first heard it because it sounds really powerful.

This one makes me feel weird. The lyrics are about death, but it's a happy death. Fun fact: An acquaintance I knew in highschool brought this one in for a class assignment where you had to pick a song that meant something to you and the class would analyze it. The teacher was thoroughly disturbed.

those two popular songs from Of Monsters And Men have a strange effect on me, "Little Talks" and "Mountain Sound." they just really bum me out when i hear them come on the radio and i can't figure out why. i don't think the lyrical content is depressing or anything. it's the key that they're in or something. the only other songs that have ever done that to me are a couple of Tool songs. "Parabola" and "Jimmy." now, "Jimmy" is a fairly heartbreaking song, but usually when i listen to depressing music when i'm depressed, it makes me feel better. "Jimmy" just drags me even further into sadness. but "Parabola" is a mystery to me. the lyrical content is hopeful and the music isn't particularly depressing. i think it's just the chorus riff and the harmonising -- some reason, makes me feel down.

I know there's a great amount of melancholic songs ITT, and I could post several myself but I thought I could contribute with something else.
The video might help a bit, but when the riff kinda "unfolds" (like, when those colors spiral out of that gun) I just feel some sort of fulfillment, forgetting time and place and a feeling that I'm completely "in" the song. Not every song does that. Sometimes I can listen to this song over and over and over.
