Kerala is a state in the southern part of India. I visited kerala last year as an tourist which got me interested in learning what is communism.

First of all, Kerala Normally Elects LDF (Left Democratic Front - Left wing parties group) or UDF (United Democratic Front - Center wing parties group). Kerala has never elected any Right wing govt.

LDF has parties like CPI (M) , CPI, RSP , JD (S) etc..while many people consider CPI (M) as not a real communist party here, it is still better than the right wing or center wing parties.

Few Facts About Kerala

1) Kerala Enjoys great HDI of 0.790 which is highest in India

2) Religion Population is approx. - 60% hindus, 20% christians and 20% muslims which all live peacefully. There is also a small group of atheists.

3) Highest Literacy Rate In India - 94-95%

4) Age Expectancy Highest In India - 74 Years

5) Minimum Daily Wage is around 500 Indian Rupees ($10) which is highest in India.

6) Indians has always given a male child a priority. Thus, sex ratio is always low in other states like 920 females per 1000 males. While in kerala, it is 1083 females per 1000 males.

7) Kerala is famous for backwaters, Beaches, Forts and Tea-Gardens. Thus, tourism normally helps for the economic development.

8) Due to almost 95 % literacy rate and high minimum wage compared to India, educated unemployed numbers started increasing in Kerala. Thus, more than 1 million keralites now work in Gulf and Australia. They send money back to kerala which is a significant part of Kerala's economy.

9) Crime : Murder, Theft and Dowry are much less than India's Average but Cheating and Arson is more. Thus, a mixed picture here.

10) Due to large number of backwaters, kerala has significant amount of Public Water transportation for free (or negligible amount). Road and Rail transportation is cheap. Air transportation is also cheap due to less airport taxes.

11) Population Growth is only 3.44% which is lowest in India.

12) Education : Most of the schools and universities are run by govt. Thus, free or low cost education is available in kerala.

13) Healthcare : Kerala has a universal health care system with importance also given on Ayurveda - Old Indian Health Care System. WHO has awarded kerala as a "Most Baby Friendly" State.

In 2006 election, LDF Came into water with 99 seats out of 140. LDF Lost by just 2 seats in 2011 election with getting 68 seats out of 140. The current govt is not popular in Kerala due to many scams like solar scam. LDF Supports are demanding resignation from current UDF Chief minister.

A rally was organized yesterday. More than 100,000 people attended the rally.
Media Polls show that LDF may win more seats in Central Govt election 2014 and State govt election 2016.

I think kerala is one of the most glaring example that Communism work. Although kerala is not a perfectly communist state, it is more leaning towards communism than capitalism.

Kerala is not a communist state of India. The ruling body there implements nothing more than Keynesian welfare reforms draped in hopeful language and revolutionary stupor. It is no more 'communist-leaning' than Sweden or Norway. India is a thoroughly capitalist country and to think that Kerala breaks this chain because it has a high minimum wage is ridiculous.

Also the CPI-M that is active there is a thoroughly bourgeois and reactionary party that has been involved in the murder of actual communists. (http://www.revleft.com/vb/communist-yet-corrupt-t176405/index.html?t=176405)
