bet you didn't know britain has a desert, did you? it's a headland called dungeness on the south eastern coast of kent, bordering on sussex and just south of dover. it's flat and barren, yet surprisingly rich in biodiversity, there are plants and birds and insects here you won't find anywhere else in north western europe. there are two power stations which give the place an eerie, oppressive hum, and around fifty wooden shacks inhabited by old fishermen and eccentrics. one, prospect cottage, was inhabited by derek jarman in the years before his death, and has a beautiful garden made up of pebbles and found objects. you'll also find many abandoned ships and shacks, a railway line, and military structures. a strange space that feels absolutely timeless. visit if you ever get a chance.

Camels just carry nasty viruses anyway!

Is it close to that nuclear power station?

very, you walk right by it and there are signs listing emergency procedures at various points.

No I didn't.

I also don't know half the places you're referring to. Probably because I'm a Yank. Anyways I hope your visit there was good

This is interesting. I knew that Poland had deserts but Britain is another story.

Is there any history to the place or did people just tend to steer clear?

looks a bit like the dutch dunes but without the dunes, and more gravel...

Sounds awesome, like the kind of place where I'd want to set a film or something.

yeah, i think a lot of that part of britain is re-claimed land which was created by the dutch way back when if memory serves me correctly. if it wasn't actually created by the dutch then the technology was at least borrowed from them

Got any pics of this area? I have always thought of Britain as wet and lush, akin to Seattle.

That is totally not a reference to an awesome song that I remembered because he wrote "there were plants and birds and..." :thumbup1:

A desert in Britain you say? Just another sign of Eurabia...
