I am interested to know what people think the characteristics of colonialism and neo-colonialism? What defines these two things?
Also, if people have or know texts on these issues, it would be helpful to know what they are.

Jesus TAT, that's huge.
Fanon seems like an obvious starting point, in terms of the "cannon". I'm just finishing "The Wretched of the Earth" and have some mixed feelings, but it's at least important historically.
J. Sakai's "Settlers" is a good kick-off point for understanding Settler-Colonialism (with a focus on the Americas, and the United States in particular). In terms of concrete history and extensive research it's fantastic.
Butch Lee and Red Rover's "Night Vision: Illuminating War and Class on the Neo-Colonial Terrain" is an excellent introduction to neo-colonialism (and its impact at the imperial centre).
*shrug* Depending on what in particular you're looking for I could probably suggest some other things. Living in colonial settler state, I feel like I maybe have different interests than might in the UK.

In the colonialism countries were occupied and exploited oficially in very clear form of law. A colony was a part of empire but its citizens didn't have the same rights as citizen of occupying country.
In the neo-colonialism, there is no such formal status quo. Countries are oficially independent but they are still occupied and exploited.
For example, India was occupied and exploited as oficial dependent territory of the UK. They were a colony. Poland is exploited by American companies and Poland's troops are fitghting for the US. But oficially Poland is independent And it's the neo-colony.
