So, the "Aiding the Enemy" charge, which would have set a much broader precedent, was dropped, however, he faces up to well over 100 years in prison.
This hardly shuts the door on future whistleblowers, of course. Edward Snowden knew the risks and went ahead anyway, knowing he would be identified, and surely future anonymous and self-identified whistleblowers will pop up. It's not something any state I know of has ever prevented absolutely.
Still, they clearly decided he was guilty before the trial even happened, and if anyone should be punished its the people who killed civilians and journalists.
