In Korea, it's common for people to lose their jobs because theyre gettin too old. Although it seems completely opposite here (Americans usually get paid more tha longer they work, seniority matters, lawsuits bout tha prejudices against old age etcetc), in Korea, they think tha old farts stayin in tha business are taking away precious job opportunities and fresh ideas from the youth. My uncle had been working at a bank, and was put into a position where they could no longer promote him (without him taking his boss's job), and after his 50th birthday, he was "politely asked" to step down. He was literally taken down from his position and was given a choice of leaving the bank altogether or accepting a different/lower position. Obviously this cuts his salary in half but with a family of four he had no choice but to accept. Do you think this is effective, considering it does keep tha employment "fresh" [ha] or does it cancel itself out with tha time/money spent training new workers ?

This is actually becoming a major problem in the U.S. Different roots and dynamics though. Companies lay people off, young and old, but the 45+ crowd cannot find employers again. This is a combination of discrimination and the fact that companies prefer younger, lower paid workers over older, higher paid ones.

It is a major problem. Not to the Obama administration of course. People run through their unemployment and then drop out of the labor force. Problem solved. I went on Social Security disability. I was one of the lucky ones.
