I'm a communist. I believe in incorporating the best of all revolutionary traditions. I have never met someone who claims to be an "undemocratic" socialist, which sort of makes proclaiming oneself a "democratic" one kind of pointless. Most socialists would consider themselves democratic in one sense or another.

I don't really have a label, but I suppose you're right; adding Democratic to the word socialist is redundant, so we'll just say I'm socialist.

Which historical figures do you most identify with?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a democratic socialist? How is it different from socialism? Or is it the same thing?

And, welcome to RevLeft.

The term "democratic socialism" itself is redundant. I think nearly every socialist agrees with Trotsky when he said "socialism needs democracy like the human body needs oxygen". It is generally a generic term used to describe someone who advocates for the public ownership of the means of production. It is also used to sound more acceptable within mainstream bourgeois politics. "Oh, yes I am a democratic socialist, I strongly oppose those democracy hating communists, those are the bad kind".

As Noam Chomsky put it, "'socialism' is a word that has been completely evacuated of content". Though its traditional definition is any sort of system that advocates for the public or common ownership of the means of production.
