Maoist prisoners on hunger strike in Hazaribag jail

HAZARIBAG: Around 80 CPI (Maoist) prisoners, currently lodged in LokNayak Jai PrakashNarayan Central jail, is on a hunger strike since Saturday in protest against death sentences delivered against two of its members including former self styled area commander Virendra Ram alias Vidrohi and Keshav Sao for Beltu massacre case in which 14 members Gram RakshaSamittee were killed in April 2001. The samittee was active against the rebel.

The court of the district and sessions judge Raj Kumar Tuli who found them guilty in the case awareded deaht penalty on July 17. The jail authorities when contacted refused to divulge anything. However, sources said that around 80 prisoners under the leadership of Narayan Sanyal and Ravi Sharma, two top Maoists who are lodged in this jail for the last three years have commenced their hunger strike.

No untoward incident took place in the jail owing to the hunger-strike but security inside the jail have been tightened.
