Anyone have any? History isn't my strong point: I'm looking for detailed descriptions of major events of historical racism towards African-Americans in the former Confed states. Things like the beginning of the American slave-plantations, Jim Crow, lynching, common stereotypes, economic relations, etc.

I'd also appreciate it if anyone could send in any examples, statistics or analyses of/on racism in the bible-belt in the modern era - key events, laws, economic, political and social discrimination, etc.

Anything you could find on anything related to the subjects above would be highly appreciated. :)

Best book I've read in ages is Defying Dixie by Glenda Gilmore. Til I read it, I didn't understand Jim Crow. It's a big book, but can be read in parts.

A book I'm particularly fond of is Klan Unmasked by Stetson Kennedy.

Kennedy was a labor activist and folklorist who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1940s, then exposed all of the secrets, passwords, and lingo to the world via giving his information to the Superman radio program.

Basically, he's the guy who single-handedly killed the early 20th century klan.
