View Full Version : Question on Female Hair Maintenance

So I don't openly present as female nor have I told anyone in my family or in my circle of friends about my gender identity so my only real option for presenting publically is long hair. While my hair is grown out decently long I am curious how one can style it in a manner that distinguishes it from long boy hair. And sorry I can't phrase this better it's 2:28 AM over here.

I used to shave my legs but then my step brother outed me and now I can't do anything. I need to go to sleep,....
Hair styles, whether considered "male" or "female" are forced upon us by culture. If you want to accept what the culture forces upon you in order to make a symbolic statement one way or another, that's fine. Just remember that these are someone else's arbitrarily formed opinions over how hairstyles should be expressed.
If you had enough control over the media and communication in your society, you'd be able to force your own conceptions of hair expression on to everyone else... not that it wouldn't just be another form of oppression - or even worth your time for that matter ;)

straighten it, die it, curl it. do whatever society tells women to do with their hair.

I am not sure what you look like or what your hair is like. I could reccomend using the shampoo Big Sexy Hair as a volumnizer. Its somewhat expensive but may be worth it. Put it in when you shower, then after your shower fluff up your hair with the bottom of the palms of your hand.Don't use a dryer, that can wreck havic on hair in terms of split ends etc.
Anyway this will make your hair bigger and thicker looking.
The longer your hair is the more difficult it may be to do this so you may want to keep your hair a moderate length, for now.
Curling your hair can make it look more feminine also. You may want to tint (not dye) your hair so it's more congruent with your skin tone.. There are some relatively cheap products you can use for this. L'Oreal puts out some stuff for this.Do this in small steps though.

You could have a flick through one of those hairstyle magazines? I just cut my own hair and imagine styles in my head (which doesn't always lead to the best haircuts, but whatever), but my mum looks through hair magazines when she's trying to decide on a style. I guess women tend to have layers put in their long hair (but then I think some guys do too). You could also try something like styling long hair in a bun/ponytail/plait. I'm probably not the best person to give advice on this kind of thing though because as long as my hair doesn't look like I've been dragged through a hedge I'm not too fussed about it.

I don't have a very complicated hairstyle, but it is still pretty feminine. I part it to the side and since I have wavy hair, it flicks up a little bit on the ends. You could probably do that with a curler.

Ironically as a cis female I can't really help you. I'm terrible at hairstyles; even ponytails are difficult for me. Anyway, I hope you find what you need ^_^.

Without knowing what you look like there isn't really much anyone can recommend specifically hairstyle wise. Different hairstyles compliment different facial features. I'd jut recommend browsing through sites like this (http://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/beauty-and-hair/hair-trends) and compiling a set ones you like. Pick yourself which you think would compliment your face best or if you'd prefer take them to a stylist for their opinion.

This of course though would mean the abolition of gender altogether making the question completely irrelevant.

But of course, this assumes that I have the privilege to have avenues other than things like hair and exc, when infact I do not have these avenues and this is the only venue I have through which to express my gender identity.

You should be a rebel and cut your hair really short like Emma Watson had when the last Harry Potter movie came out.

Which would look wonderful if I could present as a female publicly, however as I've made abundantly clear, I can not and this is one of the only avenues of gender expression I have.

You could be a rebel about it. I mean it's a hairstyle, one that many girls don't get.
