It's kinda funny actually. Old fogeys would tell you that today's music is crass and vulgar, whereas the music of their generation was innocent and wholesome.
But there isn't a trope that modern music can play today that the old-school pre-war and WW2-era jazz and blues musicians hadn't done first. The Blues especially was a haven for some of the most racy and morbid lyrical content you can ever conceive. There's isn't a single bit of subject matter from a song by, say, Cannibal Corpse that some old junkie with a guitar didn't do first in the 30s.
