Football spectators in northern Brazil decapitated a referee after he fatally stabbed a player for refusing to leave the pitch, officials say.
An angry mob stormed the field during the amateur game in the state of Maranhao and stoned Otavio da Silva to death before severing his head.
Police said the murder was in retaliation for Mr Silva stabbing player Josenir dos Santos.
One man has been arrested over the killing and investigations continue.
The incident took place on 30 June in the remote town of Pio XII, but news of the event has been slow to emerge.
The state's Public Safety Department said it started when the referee and Mr Santos got into fist fight after the player was sent off but refused to leave the pitch.
Mr Silva then pulled out a knife and wounded Mr Santos, who died on his way to the hospital.
The player's friends and relatives rushed onto the field, stoned the referee to death and dismembered his body, the department said in a statement.
So far police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the crime.
"We will identify and hold accountable all those involved," police chief Valter Costa was quoted as saying by local media.
"One crime will never justify another."

Football, not soccer!
This was a game in the amateur league, you cant blame the fanaticism really.Mostly the ones decapitated the referee where family and friends of the player who got stabbed.
Beside that though, violence in football it is not a european trend, lot of american(mostly shouth) teams have a really bad reputation for the violence they are engaged to.

If anybody's interested in my mum's first reaction on hearing this story (and let's be honest for a second...who wouldn't want to hear from that fountain of wisdom?), here it is: '...why did the referee have a knife on the field anyway?'

The game happened in a rural area of one of the most impoverished regions of Brazil, and carrying a knife in such places is very common. Everyone from my family who lives in a farm or very small city, such as where the game happened, carries a knife around, and we're not talking about pocket knives.

And amateur league games here are famous for involving small cash, but big honor, and they end up in fist fights and account settling very often.

Still not as bad as North Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Said_Stadium_riot)

As the Brazilian police say, one crime does not justify the other. So someone please call the humour police, immediately!

On the topic, Fuserg is correct; this is more about personal, or perhaps familial, revenge than about football fanaticism. Not that there aren't violent torcedores in Brazil, some clubs do have quite violent torcidas organizadas, to the point that the State often feels compelled to outlaw them. Particularly infamous is Palmeiras' Mancha Verde, named after the Disneyesque villain Phantom Blot:
