View Full Version : Is MRI needed after a clear CT Scan?

Lately, I've been very worried about my brother who has been having some serious migraines. The medicine the doc put him on has helped but I think he's been taking too much and they're not having the effect they once had.

Anyways, he first went in after several days of migraine trouble. He had a CT Scan (cat scan?) and it came out fine, then he had an MRI on his eye I believe because that is where the pain initially started but that came out fine.

Today though he experienced a pretty bad migraine and the pills the doctor gave him weren't fully taking it away more like dulling it. So we took him to the doctor again and my brother wants to have an MRI for his head to make sure it's just migraines and not something worse. The doctor said he could make an appointment with the neurologist on Friday but he gave him a shot which took the migraine away and some new pills.

This makes me really nervous as well as confused. The CT came out clean as did the MRI on his eye. The neurologist said it was just chronic migraines and he needed to relieve stress and anxiety.

If the CT Scan revealed nothing and the MRI results on his eye came out fine, can I be confident enough that the MRI scan on his head would come out fine too? I am nervous for him but my mom just thinks that his migraine is worse because he took the meds too soon too quick. We will still take him but I just want to know if I can stay positive about all this?

Stay positive. I don't have an answer for your question about the MRI specifically but I've known two people who had debilitating migraines (day stoppers that lasted multiple days) and blew through drugs to dull them without much success. They had nothing else wrong with their head. No clots, no early sign of aneurism, no cancer, etc.. Both of these folks I am no longer as close with and it's been over a decade and they still have nothing wrong with their heads and the one has found a medication that helps. The other no longer experiences migraines to the degree that they did.

Thank you! Yes, it turns out after an MRI, there's nothing benign. No cancer, no tumor nothing thank god. But he is still having some issues with the migraines. They're debilitating and he's been at home for weeks. Too much light hurts him and he's nauseous all the time.

We're also thankful that he doesn't have cluster headaches. Those I hear are so painful they're dubbed the suicide headache because the pain is so deep that several ppl with them kill themselves.

He just has migraines that bother him throughout the day and throb his head. They're no walk in the park but I'm glad he's not suffering a worst fate. He says they're gradually getting less painful so im hoping that they will subside in a couple of weeks.
