After reading Q magazines 1001 greatest songs, I was disappointed. They had loads of Radiohead, U2, REM, Madonna, Britney Spears, and other stuff which just should not be there. 3 of those bands are OK, not particularly spectacular though, U2 certainly did not deserve to have the greatest song of all time...

I believe we can do better.

I'm going to put forward 50 good songs, any help would be appreciated.

1. Nirvana: Smells Like teen Spirit
2. Nirvana: Come as You are

Why are you guys assuming that most bands more popular songs are their best ?

Like with the Sex Pistols, there were far better songs than Anarchy in the U.K, like Holiday In The Sun, No Feelings, etc.

And the Clash, London Calling was good, so was Should I Stay or Should I go but what about the Guns Of Brixton ? Career Oppurtunities ? These songs are better in every way. The reason the previously mentioned songs were so popular is because they had that weird 80's vibe that was popular at the time.

Just because they were popular does not make them the best. That is true for alot of songs, the more people like them the better they are, but not always.

No Doubt ? Rob Zombie ? Best of all time ? What ?!?

Goddamn, thank you Mr. Indy Socialist. Though these hippies will never realize the greatness that the bands you listed posses. (Just kidding hippies, but if you don't count at least one Dead Kennedys song I'll suicide bomb your houses)

For the Subhumans I think you should included All Gone Dead, that is my favorite song of theirs.

I would count the entire first Propagandhi album one of the best of all time. Essential listening for anyone calling themselves a leftist.

Hey man, I only have one MxPx song. And that is BY FAR their best song. It is hard, fast, and political.

"They're lying when they tell us this is the home of the brave and the land of the free" -- great lyric...

MxPx put on a free concert here in Lincoln about three months back... they were pretty good. I wish they'd do more songs like "Americanism", and fewer like what they usually do... which can easily be confused with the MTV crowd.

I also agree that Propagandhi is amazing. I am pretty new to their stuff, so I do not know a lot of titles.

Some titles to add while I am here on the thread:

im sorry but you have to list better NIN songs than their two most popular hits, where is "Heretic", "Sin", "The Wretched", "Something I Can Never Have", there are so many better songs than "Closer" and "Perfect Drug"

and what about "Sweet Leaf" Children of The Grave" "Sprial Architect" "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and all the other great Black Sabbath Songs. They were known for a lot more than "Paranoid" <_<

and no one mentioned Soundgarden?

you could put most of the Superunknown album on that list plus songs like "Rusty Cage" and "Jesus Christ Pose"

i would like to add to MIN's list of Clash songs

White Man In Hammersmith Palais
Rudie Cant Fail
White Riot

truthaddict11,

I also love Black Sabbath and Soundgarden, but I hate Nine Inch Nails.

I have heard of those Clash songs, but I have never actually heard either of the tunes with "White" in the title. I have "Rudie Can't Fail", and it is not one of my favorite tunes from The Clash.

Adding again to the list:

Bad Religion:

American Jesus
Skyscraper
Television
The Streets of America

Boikot:

Comandante Che Guevara
El Anarka de Noe
Korsakov
La Vieja Escuela
No Pasaran

The Clash:

Somebody Got Murdered
I'm So Bored with the USA

Dead Kennedys:

Anarchy For Sale
I Fought the Law
Let's Lynch the Landlord
Macho Insecurity
Police Truck

Reagan Youth:

Jesus Was a Communist

BUMP!

Is anyone actually going to bother compiling the list? I think that would be a really cool thing, but it will probably take quite a bit of work in actually ranking it... I suppose that could be done democratically with users posting a ballot of sorts with a given number of songs..

Anyway, I am always finding great new music...

Anti-Flag:

Anatomy of Your Enemy
Equality Song
Mind the GATT
Mumia's Song
One People, One Struggle
Police State in the USA
Right to Choose
Sold as Freedom
Watch the Right

Bad Religion:

Black Flag:

TV Party
Rise Above

The Clash:

Lost in the Supermarket

Dead Kennedys:

Chemical Warfare
Winnebago Warrior

Pennywise:

GENESIS (best know for inflicting Phil Collins on the world),
Irrelevant since those songs are from the time when he would be just the drummer and would occasionally sing. Those songs feature great songwriting and are perfectly-performed.

RADIOHEAD,

What's wrong with them?

THE POLICE,

The Police was a creative band which had it's "charm". "Walking On The Moon", for example, has a great atmosphere.

DIRE STRAITS,

Same with Radiohead. That song is pretty good, not too complex but it has a great fast solo. They were a good band that appeared when it wouldnt be expected. Maybe that's why you doubt about them...

CAN (I never enven heard of these people)

Can was a german group from the 70s that were extremely innovative, so much that basically there wouldn't be "electronica", ambient and many other genres without them. If you never heard about them, think about Radiohead's "Idioteque", then imagine it being performed with no "electronic" stuff, just with drums, guitar, bass and maybe a synth here and there, and with a japanese singing a lot of nonsense instead of Tom Yorke's. Now extend it for 15 minutes but with the repetitive drumming changing a bit from time to time but still keeping things interesting all the way. They would perform long jams without ever becoming boring. According to one of it's members, "Can" means "Communism Anarchism Nihilism", but some say that it's not true. Oh, and if I'm not wrong they were members of a commune, as other "Krautrock" bands like Amon Düül II were. That song is not as the one on their previous albums but it's so amazing that I had to add it to my list.

I'll try to post mine eventually.

I'd like to see that

There are some good choices there, but "White Riot" sucks. The Clash has many other songs that are way better. The Ramones and The Sex Pistols suck too. "War Pigs" and "Search And Destroy" are great. I don't know many of those.

I was beginning to think you weren't going to show up El Infiltr(A)do.

I think "White Riot" is a great song. Quite honestly you could include most of the Clash's songs in a best of list with the exception of the stuff from "Cut the Crap".

As for the Ramones and Pistols I'd take either of them over Genesis, the Police, or Dire Straits anyday. I've never listened enough to Radiohead to formulate an opinion on them.
