It seems that Che as a hip symbol is hitting the main stream of american pop . I see on MTV that Jay Z was wearing a Che shirt and that Puff Daddy even has a Che shirt in his clothing line , but does not call it a Che shirt but a "Icon" shirt . It is quite sickenign to see a sysmbol of something strong and beautiful become a fad which will eventaully drag Che memory through the mud , not as a hero but as yesterdays in thing . I hate comercialism because it use all prominant figures for the most dirty and horrible things . Such as some american commercials that featured Martin Luther King and Ghandi for a commercial about credit or somthing . Where will it end .

It'll end when the natural rsources are used or almost used... Because we live in consummation society and everything that can be consummed is that too... Too sad but true......

Somebody wrote in a magazine last month: "Now Che Guevara on t-shirts, will it be Osama Bin Laden tomorrow"? Arrrhhhh.....

But yeah, I hate it when I see Che's face on some teenager's shirt, wo doesn't even know who he was. Thing start to loose their meaning. Like pentagram. Everybody wears one in my school. It's sad...

I don't have a problem with certain teenagers wearing Che's image. I do but that is because I support him, socialism and share many of the same beliefs as him. I have no problem with other like minded people wearing his image. But some people wear his image to look "cool" and "trendy". Those are the people that are desecrating his memory.

One day those angry eyes will be released from his images and his memory will lead the revolution.

It comes down to freedom of speech. Besides publicity can't hurt Che it will just make him popular and inspire people to learn more about him.

I don't have a problem with certain teenagers wearing Che's image. Me neither, except when they wear an Abercrombie Shirt the next day.

Or they wear the t-shirt at with a pair of designer jeans which cost more than an average labourer makes in a year in a country like Indonesia. Those are the kind of people that really irritate me.

Derar, I don't know the song that you are talking about, but do you have a copy of the lyrics, from those it will probably be quite clear what he views are. Cheers.

When I first learned about Che I didn't even say his name until I knew absolutely everything about him. I have a policy on all revolutionaries--Intelligence beore Icon. I made sure I didn't turn into some idiot wearing Che's face just because he was 'cool'. Allthough this sounds just like the 60's when Che was remembered as a brand and not a Guerilla Warfarist who's ideals were absolutely fantastic. He wasn't remembered then as a revolutionary or for his intelligence or his speeches. He was recognized as just another fad that 'punks' wore. Let's not allow history to repeat itself, comrades. Wear Che's face with knowledge and intelligence. If you see someone else with a Che image make sure they understand who he is. If they don't simply tell them off.

Comrade Dread

PS
People think Che is 'in' again? Wow. People kick my nuts when I wear his image...

Avamatha, it isn't a song BY Che, it is a song about him by someone called Nathalie Cordon, not that I've ever heard of her.

The image of Guevara has become quite popular these days; and it sickens me a bit. When my little sister told me that "Jay-Z has that Che guy on his shirt" I was just saddened...the image of this amazing man is but another trend. Yet as all trends, this one will pass.

damn.

If you want to hear a really awesome song ABOUT Che by an awesome Spanish band check out Boikot's Hasta Siempre. It's in Spanish but, quite honestly, you don't need to know Spanish to understand the song or enjoy it. I love Boikot and it's all thanks to Radio Rebelde!

i agree with most of you that it is sickening simply because no one is really aware of che's life and che's beliefs. it is akin to rage against the machine. i went to see them in concert a year or so ago. everyone wa signing and cheering them on etc. however when we left the concert (i was wit another leftist friend of mine), the 16, 17 year old boys got into mommy and daddy's suv, put on their tommy jakcets and blasted their music. people are so ignorant sometimes. there is a real message in both the lyrics of rage and the image of che and that needs to cchange.

btw -- Avamatha you said its popular now to wear pentagrams? i think you need to keep in mind that wicca and other such pagan religions use the pentagram as a symbol of power. and these religions are growing dramatically. although there are some people who only join wicca for the magick.

Pentagrams, like che, are often worn by ignoramuses who have no idea of their meaning.
