I recently bought a book online called "Conversations with the New Reality: Readings in the Cultural Revolution". I thought it was a book that had something to do with the cultural revolution in China, but the book had no real plot description and it turned out to be about the USA during the 60's/70's and hippies. At first I was disappointed, but the book is actually really interesting...there are fascinating chapters about the beginnings of "radical feminism", LSD, Charles Manson, athletes organizing against the Vietnam War ("Jocks in Revolt"), hippie communes vs. Chicanos & rednecks, the Young Lords/Latin Kings movement, "gay power", and a bunch of stuff about the culture of the time period.

It's mostly compiled from an old New Left magazine called "Ramparts", check it out:

I didn't know there was an archive online, but Ramparts is probably one of the more famous counter-culture/new-left magazines from that era.

I never realized before reading the chapter on the Taos New Mexico hippie communes just how much violence and intimidation was heaped upon hippies back in the day. Not necessarily lethal violence, but stuff like severe beatings, having their property/vehicles peppered with gunfire, death threats etc*. Took guts to be a hippie!

*as well as plenty of "legitimate" brutality on behalf of the justice system
