I thought our Canadian Anarchist friends would find this troubling, hell, anyone should find this troubling. It's almost absurd how the guy fox masks were worn to show that the state had become draconian and then the Canadian state does this. I would assume it also means wearing any sort of facial cover up is now punishable by ten years in prison, as in, bandanas, make heavy make up, fucking glasses and mustache?
Up to five years in prison for wearing these (below) at a political event that doesn't have the states consent. Canadians should be out in the street with their faces covered protesting this.

This is fucking absurd. Another way for police to oppress demonstrators, great. But I guess it was to be expected after G20 Toronto in 2010

What does this have to do with black bloc?

Nothing to do with Guy Fox masks. I'm aware those people are mostly politically confused at best. I'm talking about people covering their faces at protests. It's been made illegal and up to 5 years in prison is the punishment. That's insane.

Are you "trolling" me? No big deal I guess. I get board sometimes too.
Bill C-309—the Preventing Persons from Concealing Their Identities during Riots and Unlawful Assemblies Act—makes it a crime punishable by a ten-year prison term to incite a riot while wearing a mask or any face covering, including face paint. This is a direct attack on blac bloc tactics, in the US and Canada the blac bloc isn't about direct action against fascism as it is in Europe it's more so a group tactic used for property damage and confrontations with the police.
"Rioting" is what the state calls it (although they do confront fascists in US, I just think it's different on this side of the pond).
This (below) will now land a person in prison for ten years

I don't understand why you have made a thread titled Black Bloc about masks? Do you know what black bloc is? Do you think it's only people who use the black bloc tactic who wear masks?

Don't be an asshole. It's obvious who they're targeting. Political protests and people who cover their faces with the intent to "riot". Who does this in the west? Marxists? Liberals? The right wing libertarian idiots in Guy Fox masks? No. Anarchists dressed in black who cover their faces and take part in property damage, what the Canadian state and other states call rioting. Of course other people have taken part in rioting and cover their faces such as the 2011 riots in England or 1992 Los Angeles riots but this is directed at political protests and we all know who's wearing the masks and breaking things. This is a communist forum and this law directly effects Anarchists who dress in black and take part in property damage whilst covering their face. Ten years in prison for doing such.

It's Guy Fawkes, not "Guy Fox" btw

I'm guessing that, once arrested, this means they can use your covering of your face as another thing to throw at you legally. Presumably it is in't illegal just to cover your face. It would be impossible to enforce, especially in a large demonstration or riot situation.
And if you're in a strong black bloc, the filth will have a tough time singling you out and taking you into custody anyway. That's kind of the point of the black bloc, as a tactic.
Long live the black bloc!

According to the article it is now illegal to just cover your face at an "unlawful assembly". Including face paint, masks, bandanas and so on. Thanks for the spelling correction. I haven't really paid any attention to the Guy Faux thing so I wasn't aware how to spell it ;)

Guy Fawkes was an actual person, who was executed for trying to burn down the British Houses of Parliament. We remember Guy Fawkes in the UK by burning his effigy on a bonfire, known as Bonfire Night, to celebrate British independence (from rule by Rome).
The Guy Fawkes mask thing is from the Alan Moore comic "V for Vendetta". The book was made into a film in 2005, starring Natalie Portman. Moore is from York in the UK, as was Fawkes.

Back during the height of the Quebec protests this sort of thing would've been basically impossible to enforce anyway, not with 100.000's of people in the street anyway

Breaking windows has been illegal for pretty long. And what the fuck is the point anyway? 99% of people are gonna side with the police, use that energy you have for breaking windows into building movements.

I would imagine that this law is mostly meant to give police probable cause to arrest people - even to make it mandatory to arrest them.

I heard about this black bloc before and I can't understand: are people trying to understand this as a centralized, organized and ideologically based group? Are people even thinking they exist?
When I go to protests I also dress in black, I also use boots, I also cover my head- specially mouth- with a black scarf, I also hang with the anarcho-punks and I also burn a thing or two. Am I part of this mysterious black bloc?
Of course they want to forbid people from wearing a mask or covering their heads: in this psychological tactic of the police that is throwing gas, the biggest resistance someone can offer is covering his nose and mouth.
