What is this about a basic income guarantee that I've been hearing about?

It is try to make capitalism socially sustainable. Basic income would limit social tensions as it happened in Scandnavia. But I don't think that capitalist greed will allow a basic income to happen quite soon.

It is so people are not forced to work in order to live. If they want a higher salary or to pursue a professional role/vocation that is meaningful to them, they will work; but if not, they don't have to.

Young people could stay out of work to look after children, or could come out of work to pursue additional training and/or qualifications in order to switch careers. And older people could choose to retire earlier, so they can pursue other interests and take on additional things in their life, before their age and physical capacity makes them unable to do so.

Plus a minimum income would help keep up the demand side of the economy, and would put a brake on the poorest running up economic debt (prevent financial institutions taking advantage of the poorest to this effect).

A guaranteed minimum income is basically a win-win situation, which means of course that under capitalism it will never happen.
