How many of you have heard of this movie, or have been following it?

I'll be honest: it doesn't look very good. Elysium will be your typical action movie sprinkled with "we are the 99%" rhetoric.

That's what I thought too, but the transhumanistic elements were kinda interesting to me.
Actually, I equate it to my own Mother Meki series if it had a lot more guns, a whole lot less depth, and a typical action plot, and wasn't Mother Meki at all.

Yeah. I also got that feeling just from watching the trailer, which is a shame as Matt Damon is a good actor and he has been in a few decent films. Same goes for Jodie Foster.
Matt Damon has also been in another movie that came out this year, Behind the Candelabra. It looks amazing and I'll be going to see it next week at the cinema.

Yeah I saw it. Matt Damon looks horrible bald imo. Also, as if anybody in Hollywood, including the people who made and star in Elysium wouldn't be on Elysium if that actually happened, what hypocrites.

With all those awful cybernetic attachments on him, Matt Damon's baldness is hardly an issue. I don't understand the appeal of cyborgs, they always look ugly no matter what film or sci-fi show they appear in.

We'll agree to disagree, I suppose...

Based purely on aesthetics, do you think this looks good?

In my opinion, these machine parts look messy. The same goes for the Borg in Star Trek, along with their grey zombie like skin.
I guess it's a matter of personal taste but I never did like the whole cyberpunk look, humans look so much better without having plug sockets and wires attached all over their bodies. If your gonna have machine parts, it's better to have them be inconspicuous.

Ah, I see.
I agree in that case, mainly because I believe that these cybernetics look woefully too '2020'-ish. Way too contemporary, not enough clatomic liquid metal.

Although Elysium is set in the year 2154, I suppose the "contemporary" look is to illustrate the more primitive conditions of Earth, which is supposed to be more of a shithole than the space station where all the wealthy live.
But regardless of the type of cybernetic attachments/enhancements that would be available in the future, my own personal preference is for none of them. Transhumanism is not my cup of tea.
BTW, what is clatomic liquid metal? Is that the stuff that the T-1000 from Terminator 2 was made of?

Pretty much, yes. Since I own no semblance of a life, I've spent extended periods of time thinking and researching, and came to the conclusion that the concept of traditional robots (the ones with clearly defined segments and limbs and wires hanging out everyone) being commonplace in the somewhat near future is utterly unlikely, at least after ~2040.

I'm sorry but Hollywood has kicked out all the artists and replaced them with geeks. No story even it has a relevant message can be sold without some super CGI sci fi or horror theme.
When's the last time you've seen a good relevant drama. I think George Clooney is the only one making them.
Anytime I look for a straight drama in the theaters I have to look for an indie art house one even though the movie is a straight drama that would've bee shown at the local multiplex ten years ago.
These geeks make movies only high school geeks would find cool. I mean how can you be that out of touch with what's "cool"? Snyder, Michael Bay, etc and yes even Nolan even though I like his work, can dive into straight cheese camp by trying to look cool.
