Cats, except the long-haired ones which I find repulsive. I'm stuck taking care of one such cat that my sister abandoned to move out, and I refuse to touch it even though I feel sorry for it--and to make matters worse, it is really needy and annoying and intrusive. I hate my life.
P.S. Dogs are stupid with highly exploitable pack instinct. That's why we humans love them.
P.P.S. I think the tiny dogs should be culled, though their very existence is our crime against nature.

P.S. Dogs are stupid with highly exploitable pack instinct. That's why we humans love them.
Actually if we look at the issue biologically, dogs are one of the most successful species on the planet. Also one of the most intelligent and genetically/morphologically-diverse (although that last part is mostly due to the curiosity and egomania of humans).
I don't really see why it has to be a contest of "who's better, cats or dogs", though. They're different animals that serve different purposes. I've had dogs who've successfully deterred dangerous wild animals, something a cat wouldn't do. But on the other hand cats are more effective at exterminating small pests. So it depends on your needs. If you just some furry freeloader to scamper around your house and exploit the need-to-nurture part of your brain, though, I'd probably go with a dog, personally.

Heroic cat from Lancaster PA:
Tales of dogs saving lives are not all that uncommon.
But a hero cat? That's special, says Kathy Rinehart of Manor Township, whose family's unique story has made one of her cats a local celebrity. (Asked about his newfound fame, Taz declined to comment.)
Despite his modesty, the cat is now in the running for the Humane Society of the United States' national Pets of Valor Award for saving 12 human and animal lives from a house fire that broke out in the early morning hours of Jan. 4, 2012.
"I woke up to a horrible sound," said John Scheffler, Rinehart's fiance, who suffers from insomnia but had taken a sleeping pill that night. "I had never heard it before, and never want to hear it again."
The sound was Taz, meowing wildly in a room quickly filling with smoke.
Because of Taz's persistence, Scheffler was able to wake Kathy and her sick daughter. Together, the family rescued nine animals from the burning home, leaving behind only two cats they didn't have time to save.
A surge protector had an electrical malfunction and caught fire in a basement room the family hadn't used in more than three years, the family said.
Firefighters told the family no one would have survived if Taz hadn't been there.
"I tell him all the time he's my hero," Rinehart said of the cat, whom her daughter rescued as a kitten. "We wouldn't be here without him. I feel like I'm forever indebted to him."
The cat is up against four dogs for the award, which celebrates the human-animal bond by honoring rescued or adopted dogs and cats that have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.

Most definitely. Cats have personalities just like dogs, only cats don't need constant attention and can exercise themselves. They are just as playful, just as affectionate and just as loyal as gods.
People who love dogs because they are so friendly and loving are people who lack proper love in their own lives, but can't find humans who will love them back so project all their emotions onto a dog. Fact.

Firstly, that was a response to TAT's and Bostana's reaction to my suggestion. Since humans hunting cats bothers them, I just wonder if cats hunting other creatures (to the extent that they sometimes drive them to extinction) is a concern for them.
In any case, most of those cats are only there because we put them there. We're responsible for the explosive increase in the number of cats. Cats are one of our many fuck-ups, and one minor thing we can do to start behaving in a more environmentally friendly manner is to drive the cat population back down.

My friend has two miniature pinchers. Archetype of the little annoying yappy dog. When I arrive at her house it always takes 10-15 minutes for them to calm down and stop barking at me.
Once I saw a small toy dog that looked exactly like one of them when he was a puppy. I found that funny so I bought it for my friends son. My friend however gave it to the dogs 'look, it's your baby!'
Those monsters instantly ripped it to pieces! They barked at it, chewed it to shreds and ate it's button-eyes.
I was a bit shocked. I still wonder if they understood that it resembled them, and saw it as a threat or something? Or if they just did it for fun.

My minpin is very vocal when a new person comes in the house, or when somebody is in the yard/at the door. Thats one of the reasons I like small dogs, they will alert you to the presence of other people/animals.
Yes, its annoying that he barks at my friends for 2 or 3 minutes (it used to be longer), but once he calms down he just lays around or jumps in your lap.
As far as the toys, miniature pinschers were bred to be "hot water bottle-dogs" and sit on people's laps/feet/whatever to keep them warm, so they love soft things, for instance, my dog is sitting by the window right now on a pile of dirty clothes that he set up from around the room. If you give them a stuffed toy, or have a particularly maleable pillow or bed spread, they will go at it to try and get the wondefully soft stuffing inside it.
Obviously the dogs do not interpret a stuffed animal to be a real puppy for them to take care of, even if it looks strikingly similar.

I'm actually not fond of pets (or indeed animals in general) so I'd really prefer not to have either.
However, on an aesthetic level I think cats are very appealing. They tend to be very poised and graceful, and there's that fierce independent streak a lot of cats have. I know that they aren't actually as bright as dogs, but in that semi-disdainful expression and fluid movement - I don't know, they seem like they know something I don't. I'd much rather have a picture of a cat than the real thing though.
I can't stand dogs, unfortunately.

My family had a golden retriever since he was a puppy, but he got old and died. :( We also had a lot of cats, so I've had the experience of living with both.
I'm more of a cat person, as they're less demanding than dogs, on average. Although if I were to have a dog, it would be something big like an Alsatian.
We've had other pets as well; my mum once bred fancy mice and we've had rats and hamsters. We also had a pet corn snake and at one point, a green iguana.
Hmm, no wonder our house was always messy. The humans were outnumbered!

I just went on youtube and searched "dog saves" and there's an endless amount of videos showing dogs who save other animals lives, baby humans, adult humans, birds! You just can't lose with dogs unless you abuse them or don't properly socialize them.

Okay, but have you noticed that those dogs aren't like chihuahuas or Yorkshire terriers, or some other small dog...I think it has more to do with size than species. I mean, you wouldn't catch a Shih Tzu jumping into a lake after its owner.

Looks like the working dogs are ahead of the decadent bourgie cats in the polls here.
Cats are imperialist destructors who destroy native wildlife. They must be purged.
Dogs, but only big dogs. Ill take a cat over a small dog any day

cats were native wildlife at one point until they were killed off by humans and their sycophantic counter part, dogs. I mean dogs should be siding with wolves, wild cats, big cats, feral cats against the human scourge not working for them
what the fuck fuck dog owners and their idiot opinions

That looks looks very new..is that from a new episode (yeah they makes new ones, disgusting). Anyways, in most episodes they do not get along. In many episodes, Jerry and dogs are united against Tom, the cat. If you are still on the side of cat, and Tom, you have no soul.

I see the creationist attempt at co-opting the awesomeness of the dinosaur for their own pseudoscience has worked on at least one person...

Big dogs are the greatest – one of the best experiences of my life was spending a year and a half helping take care of a lovable, gentle (fierce when he had to be) Rottweiler, name of Zeus. I wish he were still with us.

Why? Dinosaurs are evidence for evolution, not creation. They're also awesome, unlike creationism.
