Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves, special extended version.
Released in 1977 on the album of the same title.
Produced by Lee Perry in the Black Ark.

Other songs using the same rhythm:

Junior Murvin - Philistines on the Land, Bad Weed
The Upsetters - Grumbling Dub (this is the song used to extend this version of Police and Thieves), Dub of Justice, Babylon Thief Dub
The Upsetters with Earl "Chinna" Smith on lead guitar - Bingo Kid
Glen daCosta - Magic Touch
Jah Lion - Soldier and Police War

This song was also covered by the Clash. Murvin's version is infinitely superior.

Police and thieves in the streets
Oh yeah!
Scaring the nation with their guns and ammunition
Police and thieves in the street
Oh yeah!
Fighting the nation with their guns and ammunition

From Genesis to Revelation
The next generation will be hear me
From Genesis to Revelation
The next generation will be hear me

And all the crowd comes in day by day
No one stop it in anyway
And all the peacemaker turn war officer
Hear what I say

Police, police, police and thieves oh yeah
Police, police, police and thieves oh yeah
From Genesis oh yeah
Police, police, police and thieves oh yeah

Scaring, fighting the nation
Shooting, shooting their guns and ammunition
Police, police, police and thieves oh yeah
Police, police, police and thieves oh yeah
Here come, here come, here come
The station is bombed
Get out get out get out you people
If you don't wanna get blown up

That was different. I listened to it like three times while I was trying to find the etymology for the word undermine. I never found it but the song was cool :)

Thanks for replying, miss. Glad you liked it. :)

Why did you need the etymology of the word undermine?

Main Entry: 3mine
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from (assumed) Vulgar Latin mina, probably of Celtic origin; akin to Welsh mwyn ore

Main Entry: 1un·der
Pronunciation: '&n-d&r
Function: adverb
Etymology: Middle English, adverb & preposition, from Old English; akin to Old High German untar under, Latin inferus situated beneath, lower, infra below, Sanskrit adha
Date: before 12th century

Then they combined. :)

Hey man thanks :) Too late though but thanks anyways. I switched into a honors english class and every week we have to find the definitions, etymologies, synonyms, and antonyms for words that'll end up on the SATs or whatever. It's preperation I guess, but I don't see how the etymology of a word is very helpfull but I get points for it so I'll do it. Undermine was the only word who's etymology I couldn't find.

But anyways, back to Junior Murvin....

You should go and buy some Junior Murvin music.

Lee Perry discography (http://www.che-lives.net/users/cani/scratchdiscography.html)

Here's his besy album:

Police and Thieves - Junior Murvin

[Island (UK) and Mango (US)]
1. Roots Train
2. Police and Thieves
3. Solomon
4. Rescue Jah Children
5. Tedious
6. False Teachin'
7. Easy Task
8. Lucifer
9. Workin' in the Cornfield
10. I Was Appointed
Note: Re-issued 1994.

Or you could even download some more. On Kazaa you will definitely get an extended version of Roots Train. That's if you really like it and weren't just hoping that I'd reply and show the etymology of undermine. :D

I don't see how etymologies arre useful either, but I do think it's interesting. Possibly not when I was your age though. M-1000 would be much more interesting. Still not as good as reggae though.

You're tight Cani. Remember that time you posted a link for some awesome reggae music? Well yeah, I actually downloaded it, or at least half of it ( it was taking FOREVER) , but my friend kept on calling me (yeah I have that dial up piece of crap) and it kicked me off the internet and I never got to listen to it. Downloading music is shit, I'd much rather just go buy the cd. Hey I actually did like it though :) I didn't reply to get a response, but to promote it's greatness to everybody else :D

Junior Murvin wrote it. This is the original.

Do you like the Clash version Cani ? Obviously Murvin's is better, but do you like what the Clash did with it ?

I'd never heard it, but I'm listening to it now.

....and I'm not too impressed. I don't like the backing vocals, nor do I particularily enjoy the lead vocal. I did like the delay effect on the rhythm guitar at the beginning. Nah, I don't really like this song.
I don't really like that guitar work, with the rhythm in the right channel and some sort of horrible off beat mess in the left.

AHH, Blasphemy!

That is what the clash is meant to sound like. Energy, message and punch first and hope the rest goes in place. Ive just downloaded the wesway to the world documentary. Strummer says that they heard the song throughout london during the notting hill riots and played around with it. I think the harmony is fine, but rember, theres always something about punk...

I like most of the Clash songs I've heard, I'm just not particularily fond of that one. Probably because it's difficult for it to live up to the Lee Perry production stylee.

I like Bank Robber by the Clash, produced by Mikey Dread.
