What's up,
Craig here from Atlanta. Stumbled upon this site looking for a communist forum. Always been left leaning and a skeptical thinker. Through out the years I've studied socialism and Marxism, but never claimed to be one. I always found myself on the democratic socialist end or green party, highly regulated capitalist. Over the last year I've been frequenting a critical Buddhist board where several of the members were anarchist or Marxist. That board closed, but I want to continue conversing with like minded folks in order to learn and to take some refuge from this irrational, sickening world humanity has created.
Peace,
Craig
Welcome :)

Welcome!
I'm interested in what led you to 'highly-regulated capitalism' after studying Marxism and Socialism.

welcome, i went to atlanta 12 years ago on a student exchange, it was cool but weird, is it still so deeply segregated? (i was the only white kid on a massive black high school, my guest family never went to the historic part of town before because it was a Hispanic area, while the touristshop in the white expensive shoppingmall sold KKK and nazi pins)

I'm afraid that's pretty much the case in the entire state of Georgia. Old white men rule the state through the Republican majority, whilst the african american population is largely represented by the minority democratic party. That's how freedom works here in the peach state.
Anyways, welcome new comrade!

Kinda, yeah. Do you remember which mall this was? Peachtree Center? Lenox Square? Phipps Plaza?
It's still pretty segregated. Sometimes I'll be on marta (train) by myself or something, and white people that get on will pass up empty seats near black and hispanic people to sit by me. If I'm on long enough or it's a busy night like a sports game there will be a congregation of white people. It makes me kind of uncomfortable.

Welcome, Marxists appreciate democracy, don't let anyone persuade you to drop it.

yeah, when i was there we where there as guests of the mayor's wife, who was black of course since atlanta itself is in large majority black and there was a big row over how Georgia state wanted to bring back the dixy flag and the mayor was pretty adamant they would need to send in the national guard before he would hoist that despicable thing anywhere in town.

a former subway station somewhere in the economic center, i think it was just called "the metro" or something? my guest family took me there while it was clear that it was far out of their comfort (and economic) zone but they though i would wanted to go there (while i already found out that all the record stores i wanted to go to where in the old part of town).
ended up quite educational as i exploded against the guy behind the counter because of the nazi shit he was selling and my guest family didnt really get what i was going on about, until they saw the KKK shit that was, than they started getting nasty too :D ended up with mall security asking us to leave...

Sounds like you may have been at the underground, pretty much dead center of the city, which is kinda run down nowadays, nobody goes there anymore except to get food. I haven't seen anything that blatant, but good on ya for telling the fucker off!
